tank size for a rtc

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the statement above, But atleast have him in something thats 8'ft long x 3 - 4'ft wide.

I wasn't even comfortable getting one for my 750g. Keep in mind that they grow very fast and can hit 4-5'. 180-240g isn't going to be sufficient.

lol okay, good. If you get one, feed it live mice when it grows, that would be pretty cool. I mean, you don't have to, but...

WHAT  A 750 gallon tank not big enough for a RTC. Now lets get one thing straight I completely agree bigger IS BETTER, but let's be realistic

I kept a very healthy RTC for over 8 years in a standard 180 gallon tank. He never even reached 3' even with weekly water changes and near perfect water conditions, plus a good varied diet. I think we all agree that 3'+ RTC's in a home aquarium ARE NOT THE NORM. And as previously stated......These fish are not very active as adults and dont require a 2500 gallon pond that some other active 2-3' fish may. Good consistant water condtions are a must though, and thats a much bigger problem than tank size. Nobody seems to realize that :irked:

JMO though

By the way for anyone wondering.....I have kept more than 15 RTC's in 20 years of fish keeping . Only had 4 of them die, and never owned a tank bigger than 265 gallons. My 2500 gallon pond Idea was a waste of time/money "10 years ago" and all my RTC's did were sit in the corners until feeding time :screwy: I never said I have all the answers, and many people on these forums are much smarter than I will ever be .......... but I've been keeping these fish for a long time....With more success than most. Buy the biggest tank you can afford, keep after those water changes and you and your RTC will be happy for many years. When and If you can grow one to 4-5' you will be a legend on this forum :headbang2 I have heard of many......But seen none. IN A HOME AQUARIUM not a huge pond or exhibit !!!!!!

Go and buy one, you'll never be the same again :D

Sorry for the rant.........

lol I notice most of the advice that falls under the "you need a pool dude..." seems to come from people who have never raised a RTC.

I got tired of typing or I would have hit on that one too :D

Actually how many people do you think have ever raised one to over a foot or two ??? Most people I know throw in the towel when the RTC eats everything in the tank including the heater and rocks :D And thats usually way less than two feet :WHOA:

Bgonz, Do you have a full tank shot of your RTC in the 180?

No I dont. He died about 6-7 years ago from a weekend power outage. I'm a school teacher and I had him in my classroom. I know I have some old school senior videos with him in it, and probably some school pics with him in the back ground. I'll take a look. He was before digital cameras and I could never get any good pics of him.

I think he measured 32" in his woodshop built coffin, and he turned around easily in the 180.

Boy do I have some funny stories of a 3' RTC and some "tough" 17 year old kids........
