tank size for a rtc

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just to let you know, my pond is like 18 foot by 8 foot by 5 foot deep and i have 2 RTC inside. they are just comfortable to swim freely and openly so yeh. a pond is usually always better than a tank because these fish are wide so pond's provide the turning space.

im confused?

some say sure get one it will be fine in a 210 for life other say hell no you need a pond??

well what is it?:screwy:

It's whatever you can afford. Lol. But I wouldn't recommend anything under 200 gallons imp. Though I personally would never stick to that and try to keep the fish in as small of an aquarium as possible due to lack of tank space. XD But whatever, that's why I never bother keeping rtc past 15". Only had one before, lol. So I shouldn't be advizing about tank size.

ooo

well yea i agree also

just wondering whats the real ideal and realistic tank size for a RTC?

i know fur sure its not 5 or even 4 feet right?

Ideal..........Just line your basement and fill it completely with water, AKA..... MINI AMAZON :D

Realistic....... The biggest enviroment YOU can afford and support. ;)

No I dont. He died about 6-7 years ago from a weekend power outage. I'm a school teacher and I had him in my classroom. I know I have some old school senior videos with him in it, and probably some school pics with him in the back ground. I'll take a look. He was before digital cameras and I could never get any good pics of him.

I think he measured 32" in his woodshop built coffin, and he turned around easily in the 180.

Boy do I have some funny stories of a 3' RTC and some "tough" 17 year old kids........

Well as RTC live for 20yrs+ then you didnt give it a great life in a 180g if it dies after 7-8yrs that less than half its normal life span

who can you say it was happy and healthy if it dies so young

i would like to see pics of this 8yr old RTC in a 180G

with out pics and prof i can say i kept a RTC in a 5g for 15yrs

Straight up honest with you I wouldn't keep one in anything smaller than a tank 4ft wide for life... IMO that's bare minimum/cramped.. growing out is fine but people who think 2ft wide tank is good enough tank for life are nuts.

i wish i had a teacher like you in high school!

6x2x2 or 8x2x2 eventually but you have a good two or three years before even thats necessary. And don't forget that it's not just the size of the eventual tank that matters but stocking levels and tankmates. As they approch 2 or 3 feet in length You're basicly either maintaining the tank for them alone or providing expencive feeders...Having a RTC in a 1000 gallon tank sounds like the responsable thing to do but if that tank contains 100 other fish then thats not the case.
