people say 180 all the time but thats much to small it would grow till it couldn't turn around in a tank that size they are more sutted for ponds as they would need a very large tank

And I mean a year or so. These things have growth rates that rival oscars. I had one grow from 2 inches to 16 inches in less than a year.
RTC's like Pacus should only be sold to people with licenses that show you have a tank big enough to house them.
As for the wife, well, you would probably have to promise to hide it away in the basement or put it on display in a wall that will look extremely cool yet tasteful. This screams DIY project. If you are handy or know someone who is go for it. Realize that this tank needs to be in a basement on concrete or you will have to reinforce the floor which could cost more than the tank....
They really do need bigger tanks than was suggested. Perhaps an indoor pond might be an economical solution. Whenever you see a redtail that is happy in a large tank he is swimming not sitting on the bottom. They come from the main body of the Amazon river.
They are a fantastic fish and I understand why you and a lot of large catfish enthusiasts want to own one (or more).
Most don't plan for what future requirements are needed to keep them.

if we got a big enough tank if would definatley be on the basment floor. I think i just came across away to get my wife to let me get a tank big enough for a rtc 
. my wife said if i get her boobies then i can get a tank big enough for a rtc or as big as i want. so if ne one want to donate to the new boobie/MONSTER fish tank fund let me know. hehe
