TANKED on Animal Planet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you want to gather knowledge about fish, watch River Monsters. This is reality TV. That's the point that I've been trying to get across. Some of you understand, that these guys know fish and have a successful and lucrative business.

The show sucks IMO. Never liked ATM as they have always been overpriced blowhards.

Watching the show they come off as typical clueless meatheads who don't have any idea on how to measure or plan for a tank install.

They have no clue about the animals they buy.

Just a sad show in general. Good news is I doubt it will be back for a second season.

I am reserving judgment of the characters on this show because I understand how hollywood loves to manipulate the editing.

I disagree with the reality TV excuse though. American Chopper, Deadliest Catch, Pawn Stars, and even River Monsters are all reality TV. Take Deadliest Catch. The first season or two were all about fishing. How they fish, where they fish, what bait they use, how long they have to get the fish to the distributor, how much they all make from it, etc. Are any of us going to go do that? Probably not, but it's still interesting. Ratings soared. Same for all the shows I listed.

Who do they think the target viewer for "Tanked" is? Is it more likely to be a "Deadliest Catch" viewer or a "Jersey Shore" viewer? If all you want to do is watch Italians yell at each other, there are plenty of shows for that. I can't figure out who is watching this show that doesn't want to know anyting about fish or tanks. If they don't start giving a little meat here, I wager this show will barely survive one season, if that. And of course, some producer will take away that no one wants to watch shows about fish tanks. Well Mr producer, so far, this show is not about fish tanks.

It doesn't have to be "how-to". Somewhere between Tanked and the DIY channel would work well. Just have a 10-15 second aside every now and then with some quick blurb of relevant info. Would it destroy the show for all those viewers who are watching "tanked" and don't care about fish tanks? /sarcasm

I just saw there is a new show called "Car Fellas". More Italians yelling at each other. I haven't seen it but I get the sneaking suspicion there is not going to be a lot about cars on it.

Can anyone confirm if the "Redneck" character is actually that gung-ho about his style, living in an RV behind the shop, etc, or if this is all just a gimmick to make the show more interesting? Not doubting that he is a real employee, just wondering if they exaggerated him into a non-believable reality character.

This is what I meant when discussing the coral inserts, does anyone really think these look good? Half of them look like Barney exploded

http://www.acrylicaquariums.com/coral_incerts_gallery.htm

Put that section in the water with tank lighting and it looks 100% real. Granted, there are some cheesy fake corals out there. I haven't seen ATM make any.

The coral inserts confused me as well. I am not a saltwater keeper, but am a fan. From my reading (pardon my confusion) I thought you had to have some form of live rock in a tank (FOWLR). On the show with the sharks there was nothing but the inserts and sand. Reminder, I am a complete salt noob so I might just have misunderstood what I have read before.

There's what actually works in saltwater and what hobbiest tell you that you NEED to have to work. Two very different things. The term "live rock" is just surface area for bacteria... same as in freshwater tanks. The reason most marine keepers swear by it is b/c they don't have enough mechanical filtration. If you get the crap out of the water prior to it break down as part of the nitrogen cycle, you don't need massive amounts of aerobic bacteria to convert the ammonia into nitrate/nitrite. Marine LSS need to be a few steps higher than fresh due to the way marine fish keep themselves in check with salt levels in the tank... higher waste output.

Actually, River Monsters is not the ideal source for that either. That show uses a healthy amount of sensationalism...It's no Monsterfish with Zeb Hogan but I still enjoy it.
