Tankmates Dovii?

No, I would love to have a Dovii, but I do not have a tank big enough to raise one. A male Dovii can reach 30ins , a female 24. An 8ft 300g tank is what a full grown Dovii needs, to itself. Sure, I could put 1 in a 90, 120 or bigger, but when it needs very big, no got.

Problems that will arise

1) if you keep the water clean enough he will outgrow that quickly

2) its generally accepted that you need to give a fish enough room to truly let it grow properly, if your water isn't good it will get stunted, if it is good it won't be able to turn around without whacking the sides

We are talking monster size tanks here because Dovii are a monster size fish. What happens if it gets big in a small tank and freaks out? Bashes the sides, hurting itself and possibly causing damage to the silicone of the tank. Why not trade it for something that can truly grow with good health in your size aquariums?

Btw yes to the general public of non fish keepers a 55 is big. To people on here its a grow out tank. Its like a normal person seeing a 5 gallon and thinking its small.

It's true they get bigger than 25" but will they??? in a home aquarium??? C'mon! Most likely not! Try and think about what it is we do!? We contain big fish in smaller places than that of where they normally would live!?

BIgger than 25" in a 90 gallon no because it will die way before that. Otherwise? I know one member on here has a huge dovii that if i remember correctly is around the 20" mark. PS 55 gallon is a monster....tetra tank.

Check out Guapote Mel on YT. 30in male and 24in female in a 600g tank. You mention home aquarium. Plainly, Dovii are not a fish for what most consider home aquarium. Same goes for Umbee, Pacu ,Arawana, breeds of big Catfish, many others. Big fish need big tanks, if they dont get one, they live shortened lives. Cant be any clearer.

Criminal as in get charged, pay a fine, no obviously not. But indeed moderators are needed. Keeping a fish like a Dovii in a pitifully small tank is a promotion of uneducated and uncaring fishkeeping. Too many fishkeepers look at a certain size fish in a certain size tank and declare that he looks fine in there. You just arent getting the proper method to keep large cichlids. And presuming that this site is about the how-to's of this hobby, then yes indeed a mod should step in, and explain that Mr Pleco, and yourself are doing it totally wrong. If not a mod, then at least some input from Dovii owners that actually know what they are doing.

Mad Wolf you and some others supporting you may not have realized it but your query has invited responses that would conflict with how you're keeping your Dovii. By asking what tankmates you can keep with the Dovii your asking for others opinions and their experience and in order to make a proper recommendation tank size needs to be considered in that response, so of course people will say what they think about the tank the Doviis being kept in. It's not really reasonable to fault them or accuse them of changing the subject since tank size is always the subject when keeping fish.

I will how ever state that all those opposing how your keeping the Dovii could have been more tactful in expressing their opinion. If you want to have a debate and be taken seriously that's fine but choose carefully how you prove your point as being offensive isn't necessary to prove ones point. So while I don't think the responses thus far have crossed the line I want everyone to be mindful going forward.

Where are the moderators when posts like this appear? But indeed moderators are needed. Keeping a fish like a Dovii in a pitifully small tank is a promotion of uneducated and uncaring fishkeeping. Too many fishkeepers look at a certain size fish in a certain size tank and declare that he looks fine in there. You just arent getting the proper method to keep large cichlids. If not a mod, then at least some input from Dovii owners that actually know what they are doing.

As for Moderators being needed for posts like this, that's incorrect. There are plenty of people still learning on here so misinformation is abundant and expected. If a Mod stepped in every time someone posted something that was or might be incorrect most threads on here would be mostly compromised of Mod responses. Patience by more knowledgeable members is what's needed as well as better answers. Everybody loves to throw out you need this blah, blah and that blah, blah but few take the actual time to explain why. If you want the community to grow and knowledge to spread look to yourselves don't pass the buck. The world and this forum starts to change with you.

Remember Mods are here to uphold TOS not be the crutch of the community because no one else wants to take the time to educate their fellow members.

I watched the video in yt it wasn't a 30" male and 24" female,more like 9" and 15"-18" !

Please don't belittle others claims in the hopes of furthering your point, especially when the sizes you use are purposely under estimated. Now while I won't say that the male and female are definitely 30" and 24" but I think it's obvious they're bigger then 18" and 9". I'm sure you can think of better ways to prove your point then dragging someone else's(who hasn't even posted in this thread) reputation and fish through the mud by stating the fish sizes they gave are false.

Lol! I was just talking in general, I didn't want to get into too many specifics of who did what. No offense intended.

That goes for everyone I hope my post wasn't taken offensively or sounded harsh; as I just wanted everyone in general to be more mindful of how they're expressing themselves so the thread wouldn't turn into personal attacks, tit for tat or derailing posts.
