Not to sound like one of those people but your GSP probably needs brackish conditions... or marine if he/she is full grown

I was trying not to say the same thing. You beat me to it.

I had a small school of white cloud minnows and the puffer destroyed them. I added some guppies as dithers cause I thought the puffer was bored, and the puffer was getting a little skittish. I knew the puffer was going to get the guppies. They only lasted a day.
But I know the fish does not stand a chance.
You've answered your own question. Some puffers are OK with tank mates, some are not. You have a vicious killer on your hands.

Has anyone tried archerfish?

I've never tried this or kept puffers but just off hand archers seem like they could take the heat, or dish it out with a quickness, or just be able to out run the puffers. IDK about in a 29 though.

I think I have seen puffers and archers in pet store tanks, but I am not sure how it works out long term.

Archers will easily outgrow a 29g. So will a GSP.

It comes across like your fish is trying to put it out there he is not into roommates. If that its acceptable to you then win=win but if it isn't you may want to consider re-homing him. I can tell you in my experience with puffers that when any I have had have shown aggression to tankmates it doesn't matter what kind of living thing I put in that tank I am just writing a check they have to cash. In aquariums every ones definition of success is different, speaking only for myself I like species tanks because the fish tend to live to their optimum life expectancy more often than not and their overall individual and school stress levels benefit. When I have healthy fish that have already exceeded their average life expectancy, I feel like I have accomplished something good and its satisfying.
