It's a male and a female, and they "share" the cave.. ..it's got a few hides setup in there.. sometimes they lay around each other, and I was told that's just what snakes do.. they share warmth.

Doesn't matter how many hides are in there, that one hide is the optimal one, and they will at best put up with each other to have that spot. Yes there are species that have "communities" and share hiberniculas and basking spots and even "mother" their young, but the ball python isn't one of these social snakes. It's a nice looking set up too, and it's a nice looking royal (the one you can see most clearly).

Set up looks great but I also have to agree that keeping them together is bad husbandry. Everything may be all hunkie dorie for now.....but..........

And the place featured on DJ's was a joke. Example...lets take these three retics out of thier enclosure and then put in two BC's but not actually take the time to clean and disinfect the enclosure first?? Oh and before anyone says that they just didnt clean the enclosure for the TV show take a look at the place. Proper husbandry isnt high on the priority list from what i could see.

synapse989, joke or not, people actually thought boas are dangerous because of the way they treated them in that episode. That is why everyone is so uptight, because they made snakes look more dangerous than they really are just because of the way they grab them and move them around -- and not to mention what they done to Mike Rowe and his reaction to everything.

Good place, but unprofessional. We don't need bad stigma for the hobby by someone in the hobby. You will be hardpress to find a major reptile forum that liked the episode anyway.

yeah......I guess. ...it is in TEXAS afterall... people down there are kinda..:screwy: ..they think it's funny to play jokes with rattlesnakes.

I'll just add my $0.02 and say that working at an LFS that sells exotics, as well as meeting LOTS of reptile keepers from noobs to people with 25+ years has taught me one important thing: There's not always only ONE way to keep reptiles successfully. Just because it works for you doesn't mean it will work for someone else, and vice versa. That doesn't mean you shouldn't research the hell out of everything you can, and to be honest I personally wouldn't keep two ball pythons together, but I know people (not to mention a zookeper) who have done it successfully for many years, and to my thinking if over the course of 3 to 5 years no major health problems arise as a result, then I would feel a little foolish arguing that they really are stressing each other out and they will someday end up dominating (or eating?) one another. It may be true in most cases, but I just dont think you can say with certainty that under the proper conditions snakes CAN'T be kept together. That said, I would leave it to experienced hobbyists and professionals who would be constantly alert for any behavioral change that could indicate compatibility issues. But really I don't see the need to get so up-in-arms about it, on either side of the debate. Reptile people have a habit, I've noticed, of thinking their way of doing things is "THE way" but I think this can be detrimental for the hobby as a whole.

yeah. and I know I didn't mention anything about shedding yet... but that's one very good way of telling if your animal is healthy and happy...

watch for changes in common stuff. ...they're both VERY GOOD EATERS... and last time they shed, it was like a pair of rolled up tube socks..

am I wrong to use this as an observation point?? eating and shedding?

and I do agree that too many reptile owners are very opinionated and argumentative...

The reason why we are so "opinionated" is because the general public treat reptiles as fish and most of them think of us as freaks with tattoos, motorcycles and piercings.

are you calling me a freak because I have tattoos and a motorcycle? :nilly:

what do you mean by "the general public treat reptiles as fish"

Ever seen iguanas stuck with water dragons and chameleons along with tree frogs in pet stores and some low-rated zoos?

Yeah... that. Also, the whole disposable attitude as well.

yeah I know what you mean.. I don't consider any reptile pet run of the mill..
