Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After reading all 21 pages I've come to the conclusion that if I ever purchase a Jardini it will live in it's own tank. I'm not overly thrilled w/ that because I live community tanks, but this fish is just too awesome not to own.

i had my jar with 2 clow knifes. the jar would always pick on the knife even though the knife was a bit bigger. the knife would hide in a cave on the bottom and not come out even for food time because he is scared of the jar. then the jar got bigger then the knife because its eatting all the food. one day he killed the knife and they were in the same tank for over 6 month. they were both about 8-10 inches

After reading this thread now I understand why suddenly my 8" Jardini (Known as Pearl in my place) become an attacker. But until now all the tankmates (4 Blood Parrot, 3 Golden Barb, 2 Tinfoil Barb) still alive but not sure for how long. I have plan to add a Silver Aro but look like have to cancel it and have to find another safer place for the tankmates. Thanks to the creator of this thread.

So someone please elaborate on exactly how the Jar kills fish. I can imagine the fin nipping though.

The reason I ask is I have always loved a huge Jar with all the colors and with the passing of my 24" Silver I am now Aro-less for the first time in about 15yrs or better....so it MUST be replaced.

I have a 12"+ Widebar and a 12"+ Fl Gar in my 180g and I was considering adding a 6-7" Jar as I (ASSUME) he will not be able to do any real damage for some time. If he starts I'm sure I could find another Jar to try or a buyer for my 12" Widebar pretty easily.

Let's here some stories of EXACTLY how the Jar kills larger fish.

Thanks...

You should be okay with the widebar I have seen them together with jars, the gar you might have to watch though. you could always start with a bigger jar. Maybe if you start with a 8-10 inch jar you would be fine.

I have three jars in 3 sepate tanks. They are all growing fast, 2 of them are like 9 inches, the is having problems eating he's about 6.5 inches (i gotta get him on track). The biggest of the three is in a community tank with a bunch of little catfish, corys, 2 big blood parrot cichlids, 2 flowerhorns, 2 jewel cichlids, and some convicts. Oh and a little 4 inch dovii. They all get along fine untill the day my jar decides to snap!!!

or the dovii gets big and decides to snap, lol

i imagine they would nip at everything and hit the fish. my 4" 4-lined pim killed my 7" silver aro. had flesh wounds from biting and split fins...happened overnight

I had a 24" Jardini in a 265 with a couple 12" Oscars, a few med-lg Longear Sunfish, and a 4" Thorichthys ellioti. It killed the Oscars and bullied the sunfish a little, which can be near demonic themselves at times. The only fish that it didn't bother one bit was the little T. ellioti, which I thought would've been a snack.

Hey there guys,

I'm new to this forum so I hope you guys are not too bashful. This is a very informative thread compared to other places I have gone though.

It sucks to hear that it's hard to keep a jardini with tankmates. I've actually had a 12 inch jardini with a 14 inch silver in a 125 gallon tank at one time til the 14 inch silver died of natural causes (no bit marks or fin nips). they were together for like 1.5 years or so, dont remember. I guess the trick i used was to "punish" the jardini like how you would for a dog when he does something bad. I'd usually give the silver better food while the jardini would only get pellets. it seemed to understand after a while. Quarantine also helped too. and as a reminder, when the aussie would show signs of aggression or cornering the silver, i would tap on the canopi so the aussie would know that im watching him and about to punish him if it continued. It helped me keep 2 in a tank, the only drawback was it kinda made my jardini become easily startled. =/ kinda a lil ***** but then again, Maybe it worked cause i was one of the "lucky" ones. we'll never know. ooh, i also fed didnt feed them live food, frozen prawn/crickets was the best it got. Maybe that does help suppress aggresion like someone stated

Well, after reading past 22 pages of mostly negative feedback, i decided to register for monsterfishkeepers.com to get an opinion from you guys

Im hoping to have a Jardini tank again, since i miss having one and its now in season. I wanted to know if he would co-exist with a 6" datnoid (only 1 person agreed so far), 3-4 4" tinfoil barbs, and a 6" clown loach in a 125g when the jardini is going to be introduced at about 4". Of course it would work out for the time being since he wont "snap" til later, but i provided the length of fish so you could kinda have an idea of growth rate as well. Will it work out in the long run? what should/could i do to increase the chances? If not, how long do you think i have? i really want the jardini and datnoid to work out though. the clown might have to go if he grows too slow. the barbs i dont really care about, just to add extra life to the tank. any thoughts anyone? any other tankmates that would be safe? thanks for all your help in advance.
