Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
umm...first welcome to MFK
fish can not be trained as dogs...and i definitely don't think ur jar can tell the difference in the food to be better or worse...they're all just food to him. i would understand if u feed the sliver more than u would for the jar, cuz well, the one gets more food will grow faster, thus more dominant.

and i don't believe that by tapping on the canopy has any effect other than just distract ur jar's attention, and startle him. being aggressive is just jar's nature. they're just that way, there's not a single or definitely factors that trigger them to be aggressive. so i don't think there's such a thing as the lucky one.

o, and about feeding live food, i used to think it makes a difference in their behavior, but i'm not so sure anymore. cuz i used to feed my jar feeder gold fishes for treat every now and then. but i've stopped feeding him live food for a long time since, however, i don't realli see any behavior changes. it'll still chases his tankmates around, ripping their fins, send their scales flying...etc. its behavior actually got worse i think, but i doubt that's due to the diet change, i think it's just got much bigger, and he's starting to feel cramped in my 85g.(moving him into 180g later). also, i've seen some big big jars in china, and they feed all live food over there. but their jars are kept in tanks w/tank mates, and they're doing ok.

as far as tank mates though, there's no definite answer, u'll just have to try ur luck, cuz every jar's personality is different. like my jar, it doesn't take interests in my bichir at all, but some ppl's jar would kill their bichirs...who knows, it all depends.

well.. thanks for the reply. I wonder if you are correct in your speculation or not, because it seemed to work for me since i had 2 failed attempts beforehand before i tried to "condition" them. It kinda sucks to feel that it was a wasted effort. wells, imma try it again in another tank with a jardini and asian and maybe a silver. I'll let you know if it works out. all that is theory though, not a solid proof that it works. could be just coincidental.

can anyone else vouche for datnoids doing well with jardinis, and arowanas in general?

haha wow sound like i must be one of the lucky ones, iv got an australian snakehead gudgeon at about 8 inches living with my jar which is at 14 inches now, n they seem to get along realy well just providing the SH gudeon doesn;t get in its way.

I have dats with both of my arowanas...they do very well together. I have NGTs, NTTs and ITs in with my silver, and I have big ATs in with my Jardini. I have A LOT of hiding spots for the ATs because every once and a while my Jar will decide to take a few snaps at his tankmates and as long as they have a place to retreat to he usually leaves them alone after a while.

thanks kenyan. what type of hiding places do you have? cuase its kinda hard to hide a big datnoid in my opinion. live plants? driftwood? ceramic caves? and how big is the jardini and ATs now? also, when did the jardini start attacking them? sorry for so many questions. ur the first one that seems to know =)

and that gorilla for ur profile picture alwys makes me laugh when i see it

everyone was telling me "jars wil kill everything" but i tried anyways.
so far i have found this. through observation, my one started to get aggresive after 11 inch or so. then it becamse territorial. it attacked a giant gourami to shreds...but survived - My jardinii even killed a pleco! and mangled another which one survived.
so far my car lives with 4 tank mates, 2 tinfoils, 1 flagtail prochilodus and a spotted metynis. i found that the reason why thee fish are not attackd are for 2 reasons...

they are not big enough to compete for food yet, and or they are too fast swimmers to catch. cos same time i put in dult silver dollars, but it attacked those constantly.

i am considering putting my jardinii with other fish but ill have to see if it will work. very hesitant. loner this guy is

My jardini is about 12" now and kills what ever i put in there. He just recently killed my 12" albino pleco.

My Jardini lived just fine w/ my bichirs until 11-12" long. One day I saw my Jar swimming w/ my smallest bichir hanging out of his mouth like a cigar. That was it, bichirs are in their own set up now and my Jar is alone. Good thread.

okay, so my Jar is about 10.5" now and within the past 3 monthes and i have intoduced him to 5 tankmates...1x 2.5" indo dat, 3x 2.5" clown loaches, and 1x 6" RTGG ...and i have to say there is no aggression from my Jar at all in the tank :woot:..(although, the small indo picks on the RTGG sometimes :screwy: )...so much for Jar's being "killers!" lol ...or maybe he's just a wussy? ...either way i couldnt be happier with the outcome...

when i first read this thread i didnt want to even try to add tankmates..now i would recommend to anyone to at least try it with your Jar..you never know.:naughty: (but, be sure you have an extra tank on the side just in case, for the wounded, lol) ;)

Hey playa, does ur jardini try to eat the datnoid? i had a 2.5 inch indo also, but i traded him in cause i figured he'd be too small and would become food. I would also think that the datnoid in ur profile picture would be eaten by that arowana as well. How is he doin?
