First of all, feel free to call me an idiot here if this is a stupid question, but I thought I would ask anyway. Would it be possible to keep two different types of animals (say, a lizard and a frog) in the same habitat? Like if you found a lizard and a frog that live in the same conditions and had a tank that was big enough, would it be ok to keep them together? Maybe if one of them was ground-dwelling and one was arboreal, kind of like keeping bottom-dwelling and mid-level fish in the same tank?

Interesting question..

the short answer is no
there are exceptions but mainly no
you could for something fun, get a tank and make it into a plaudarium and have amphibians and fish
or something fun in the summer\spring would be to collect a few different tads that look different from a local pond and grow them up but I would check local game laws before doing this

Possible? Certainly. Advisable? For the most part, no. I suggest you don't mix species unless you are very familiar with the needs and habits of each species kept separately. Also keep in mind that mixing is much more likely to go well in a large enclosure, like those at some zoos, than in a small terrarium.

Does anyone have an example of two species that have been mixed in the same tank successfully? I would assume that you would want to stay away from aggressive species for the most part, right?

To get a little more specific, I was thinking about doing something with a Scheltopusik - European legless lizard - and some sort of arboreal gecko or frog, with a relatively large enclosure, the idea being that the Scheltopusik would stay on the ground, while the gecko or frog could get up into the upper part of the tank onto branches if it needed to. I wouldn't be able to do it for a while, but figured I might as well find out if it would even be possible first.

It can be done. When I was younger I kept anoles and tree frogs together, not knowing any better. Everything seemed ok. Its hit or miss. But for the most part reps are solitary and don't need or want other things in there space.

Yeah, scheltopusiks can and will take down smaller lizards.

If you must mix animals, you're probably going to have better success mixing, say, two arboreal geckos, or two basking turtles, or two treefrogs, with similar habitat requirements.
