This may seem counter-intuitive for most Monster fish keepers, but my 2000L tank has been running for a little over two years and lately I've been considering downsizing...

The one compromise we made when buying our house (instead of building) is that my "dream tank" would have to be downstairs on the concrete slab, rather than in the living room where I really wanted it. Didn't seem like such a big deal at the time, we had an ideal space that backed onto the garage so the filtration could be plumbed through into there to keep the room quiet, and the plan was that it would be like a second lounge. The only problem is that it isn't. In an average week, aside from feeding (which my wife does half the time because of my shifts) and water changes I'd be lucky if I spend more than 5 minutes sitting in front of the tank. I love having a big tank and it isn't really a lot of work or cost, but lately I've been asking myself how much value/enjoyment I get from it, and if I wouldn't prefer a smaller (still somewhere in the region of 180-250g) tank somewhere where it is going to be a more visible part of day to day life.

So my question is how do those of you with tanks locked away in basements, sheds, spare rooms etc, go about making sure you spend enough time in there to get enjoyment from the aquarium? How much time on average do you spend watching the fish (not working/feeding on the tank)? Would you do it again, or is it not worth it?

My main show tank is in the living room. In the basement I have 4 grow out tanks. I got down there and chill when I need a break.

I have had my 1000l tank in the basement. I love the size and space for fish but i also struggle to get time to just go there and relax, never happened in an average day. Now my situation is a little different and the basement is also a gym, and I plan to train there some times per week, so I should be able to enjoy the show more now. But on my next house, no tank in the basement, it's not worth it as much as even a 200l tank in a place you spend a lot of time everyday. I have a 200l planted tank with catfish and a salvini at my office and it gives a lot of day to day enjoyment despite the much smaller size and limited stocking abilities

I have my big tank in my living room so I can sit and enjoy them every nite while my wife watches something on tv that I don't care for but I have a 315g that is in my basement that I would love to get rid of because of this reason that I am never down there to enjoy. The only reason I have it is a 13 year old monster fish lives down there and does not get along with the others in the upstairs tank. He is part of the family therefore he will live out his life under the stairs and unfortunatly he won't fit in a smaller tank so I cannot downsize

Don't know if any of you have a finished basement but mine is finished and I made my whole basement into a family room with my big tank opposite the tv. That way we spend more time downstairs than we do in the main living room. I also don't have a tv in the main area just couches for when guest comes over. Most of my evening after work is spent downstairs so I can enjoy my tank while the kids do homework or watch tv.

All of my tanks are in my basement and while I would like to have a nice sized display up on the main floor the layout does not really allow for such a set up.I have kept most of my tanks in the basement in both of my homes that I have owned and lived in so it is no big deal to me.I spend a good bit of time there be it with my tanks or with other projects...

Fishnatics; it's not really a basement so much as a spare downstairs bedroom, so it's all lined and civilised, there's a couch in front of the tank, but that's about it. I really have to go down there for the specific purpose of watching the fish, and for me it seems like the aquarium should be a part of day-to-day life rather than a specific activity I have to dedicate time to observing.

personally i would only put growout tanks in the basement, unless finished. maybe a breeding setup. that what im gona do for my 40B, 2x 55's, and my 125RR SW for clowns and corals

also have a 10 and 20H next to my be and a 72BF on the main floor. imake it a point to spend atleast 10mins/day/tank observation. halfhour total/day. enought time to drink my first cup of coffee...
