Tanks in the basement; yeah, or nah?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lately I've found it to be a good thing to have my tanks safely away from potentially annoying visitors who may drop by.I rarely invite new visitors down to see the basement layout due to the litany of silly comments and questions that non fish keepers tend to come up with.

thats why rhere is only guppies and about 8 silvertip tetras in the 72BF right now xD nowthe only question i get is "how are they?"

Have my 180 in the basement because of the weight, on a level concrete floor. If I had my way it would probably be on first floor supported with floor jacks underneath the floor joists. My wife is not a hobbyists so I compensate space to keep us both happy:)

the wife is begging for the 125 to be setup with a 55 as a sump. but we cant afford it atm. shes getting impatient lol. it would be in the basement, but i refuse to spend so much on fish and corals to only see them for 20 minutes a day. im gona reinforce the floors and put it in the living room. might take a year or two, but patience is a lost virtue. especially with her -_-

I just don't invite stupid people into my home... :p

Cheers for the feedback, nothing is going to happen in a hurry anyway, the best spot for a tank in the living room is where the fireplace is, so there would need to be a bit of work done first. If I moved that I could possibly go up to 100cm wide, anywhere else and it would be about 60cm max. And I do like wide tanks!

Good for you and neither do I but the wife's friends and their children come over from time to time.

Most of our 140 tanks are in the basement as there is no way they would be supported on the main floor. My only regret not having a walk in basement with double doors. The plan now how ever is to build a fish house but the biggest tanks will stay in the basement as they are just to hard to move. The biggest plus for the basement is the concrete floor no carpet no flooding worries.

I'd love to have a walk out basement with the sliding door, then I could set up a nice indoor pond.

Yeah, mine is finished too. I pretty much live down there except coming upstairs to sleep. We keep the poofy recliners set so you can turn from the giant tank on one side to the entertainment center on the other.

Basements rule! They stay cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and when setup right are almost utterly silent. Perfect. I moved the entertainment center downstairs when I used a projector way back when and was never happy on how dark I could make upstairs rooms and then have lived downstairs ever since.

If you're going to keep giant tanks, you pretty much have no choice anyways.

But I do wonder the same thing about keeping tanks in garages and sheds. I don't think that's the same as keeping in the basement at all.

Also they are safer.. I agree with KR.. I like not having the normal visitor not having access. Also if there is any leak, there is no damage.. it just wets the carpet instead of a wood floor and seepage onto other levels.

Tanks that can be seen from outside are vulnerable… a well-placed round through a window would cause massive damage, loss and mess. Even if you don’t have enemies, all it takes is a mischievous neighbor kid with an imagination. It would be very easy monkey warfare.
