Tanks Too hot.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
83 is pretty warm for Corys, its always been to my understanding they prefer low to mid 70s with 80 pushing it for most. There are some that don't mind warm water though like the pygmys corys.

If no canopy. Put a fan on it. Aim the fan at the surface of the water as to create ripples or movement. Of course be careful that it is secure and in no way is a hazard to falling in. Your evap will increase and temp reduction should be at least 3 degrees, possibly more.

depending on what your going to stcok it with permantely (meaning lrg cichlids) 83-f is fine. My setup in my garage reaches 87-89 and to be honest my cichlids seem to like it they eat more, they swimming like normal a lil more aggressive but not to the point to be fatal or serious harrassing. I have 2 air pumps and my filter pumps about 1100gph.

Use a light diffuser like egg crate instead of your usual hood. Also I only mention this just in case but leaving the light off will keep your temps down too but im sure you already had that figured out.

i agree with the eggcrate or fan ideas. adding additional air stones wouldn't hurt to see if that also helps. i'm actually surprised that 83 degrees would be giving you that much trouble. i'd wonder if there was some sort of contaminant getting in your tank that was actually the culprit.

I would suggest their metabolism increases thus their activity increases which in turn drives up their food intake... as opposed to 'they like it'...

Most species of SA/CA Cichlids will be fine at 85*F and under... many will do fine a bit warmer as well... The farther south their natuve waters are the less tolerable to extreme heat they will be (and vise versa).

thanks guys, as of right now i cannot add a fan, the air stone is running 24/7

its now at 85 degrees even, i came home to 2 more dead fish.
the tank ran for well over a year with various other types of fish, same decorations and everything, the only that has changed is the temp, now that its summer its as high as ever, i guess ill just settle for cichlids.

How would red belly pirahna do in 85 degree water?

Sorry to hear that man. Boseman rainbows do well in warmer water. Also Lungfish if I recall correctly. As for the pirahna I would think its ok but then again I would think your stock should have been fine from the start.... Truth is I have turned up my heat to 87 before to help fight ick and had no issues with my cichlids or my community tanks or my bichir tanks.

I really don't think it is the temp. What kind of filter are you running? A whisper 60 is rated for a 60 gallon tank but I wouldn't trust one on a thirty gallon tank. Maybe the bio load is too much for the filter.
