I really don't think it is the temp. What kind of filter are you running? A whisper 60 is rated for a 60 gallon tank but I wouldn't trust one on a thirty gallon tank. Maybe the bio load is too much for the filter.

could going from say 76-78 lfs warmer straight to 83ish do it.

i just thought of this. as well as the stress but maybe the shock of going 5 to 7 degrees warmer.

If your just dumping them in the tank then yes... they need to be acclimated to the tank by floating the bag for 15 minutes then slowly adding water from your tank to the bag with the store bought fish.
