Hey all, I just got in my driftwood pieces from manzman and i'm really excited, they're currently floating in my 75 gallon and I had a couple questions. I'm not concerned about the coloration caused by tannin, though I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't harm my fish. So basically in a nut shell

1) Will my fish be harmed by me leaving the driftwood in with them?

2) How long do you think it will take for the pieces to waterlog and sink?

Thanks for the input, hope to get some responses ASAP

Hey, congrats :)

You will likely see your ph lower, but other than that, there should be no effect on your fish. They will probably feel "more at home" if there are some tannins in the water.

I have a small piece of new wood in one of my tanks. It's been in there 3 weeks and still wants to float. I am not sure how long manza wood will take though.

Post pics once you get your tank arranged :)

definitely will, seeing as how the PH may lower and it's already not the highest (around 6.6) should I add a good-sized media bag of crushed coral to counter-act the lowering process?

I have a piece of driftwood that still floats after being pinned under a rock for 6 months. It depends on the type of wood and the size. But burying them or somehow keeping them on the bottom allows them to become water logged faster. And no tannin will not harm your fish. In fact it's good for many types of fish. Especially CA/SA cichlids or any fish that comes from black water.

Good thinking. I admit, I am not familiar with eels or bichirs, but I know the others prefer a higher ph. Maybe just watch your ph and be ready to add the crushed coral if it lowers.

I don't think there is a major concern...but its a good idea to keep checking.

I bet the tank will look amazing. Manz has some fantastic pieces!

The coral may be a good idea. But if you are only adding a small piece it should be fine.

Yeah I'm more than happy with the pieces I got, + I already had another piece in there so i'm already used to the yellowish tannin tint, but it isn't manzanita and i didn't know how much of a difference the wood types make.... I already know how ima have it set up and I can't WAIT for these things to sink haha. i'm already tempted to buy a couple pieces of slate at the LFS and tie em down with fishing line :P

eh 2 decent sized pieces, both about 2' long not too awful thick though. I'm gonna keep a REAL close eye on PH and add coral the second I see a change

Yeah, I bet you do before long. I got tired of mine floating after only a couple of days. I did like Younglin and found a way to wedge it between and under some rocks. It's crazy how much "lift" a piece of new wood has in 30" of water!

Take care man...

I had to use a 10 pound piece of slate to keep a two foot piece of wood on the bottom.
