not related to original post but this black sand is looking pretty freakin good if i do say so myself... mixed a little and that aint bad either so when the peacock digs everything up it'll be all good
depends on the wood. I soaked my manzanita in a 40 gal plastic drum. the branches took about 3 weeks to sink. the stumps took a little longer. not many people have as much manzanita in thier tank as I do. my ph never changed but then my ph is always a steady 7.6. tannins were gone after a couple of months which sucks, as I wanted the stained look. tannins will not harm fish and can actually be beneficial to them.
yeah I really like the brownish Tint, just wanted to be sure that it won't hurt any of my fish/plants/etc - i've got it set up in the top corner of my tank where it looks pretty cool, so waiting for it to sink won't be quite as bad
To all the comments regarding the tannin lowering PH, that is a half truth. Is your water soft, neutral or hard? If your water is on the hard side the buffer capacity may not allow the ph to budge. ph is an overall indicator of hardness. You really should familiarize yourself with kh/gh values of your tank, to know if the tannin will have any impact. My manzanita took a little over two weeks to get water logged..
Example, this tank is about as black water (visually) as it gets but my water is hard so the tannins have zero impact on ph. There is over 200 lbs of wood in this tank, java, manzanita and malaysian. If this tank was still on RO, the wood would for sure crash the ph.
Sweet your good to go. If you really do like the stained water look (me too) you can buy a bottle blackwater extract and dump straight in the tank. Won't hurt a thing
