I was thinking of having one of these guys and was just wondering if they were any aggressive. I have heard they tend to be easy to feed. Are these hardy fish? I was thinking of maybe keeping a Atlantic Tarpon. I have also heard that these guys can survive in both fresh and saltwater but which would be better for them?

Atlantic tarpon are saltwater they also get 8ft. and weigh up to 300lbs they can not survive in freshwater, by this i think you should go with their smaller freshwater relative the indo. pacific tarpon which if i'm not mistaken rarely grow to 16in. someone correct me if i'm wrong (politely :))

Both species are capable of living in fresh their entire life.

I have never heard of anyone keeping one. I would however, like to see it.

True story. Also there is possibility of 2 sub species of Atlantic tarpons. One stays smaller. Some of the populations actually are cut off from the ocean in s.a. they get big, but not as big as the ones that have access to the ocean.

I have Indonesian tarpon and they are a great dither fish. Mine starting eating pellets the day I brought him home. Keeps aggression down and is fun to watch, a very active and pleasant fish.

Actually the record for indo tarpon is 62". But the common size found in the wild is 16-20". That was from fish base.

exoticfishguy has some Atlantics and possibly some Indopacs. He has a thread about his two foot GATF in Other Characins and in that thread you can see several that are probably 18" long.
