traditional japanes style tattoing is called Horimono or irezumi.
the tradtional hand tattoing(with out machine )is called tebori

The japanese style is not called horiyoshi, the name horiyoshi come from the the term horis which means master yoshi is his family name so combined it is horiyoshi, so horiyoshi lll is just the third generation taught by the horis(master) of the yoshi family.
the original term for the style is ukiyo-e(edo period 1603-1868)

I can use google too.

But if you go into a tattoo shop in the US and ask for "horimono" or "irezumi," people are just going to think you're a weirdo. People might know it's called that, but it is not the term used in conversation.

i agree on that most folks in america dont know any of those terms,i dont need to use google although it is a good tool,i actually trained in tebori when i was an apprentice, and to train in that syle they are kinda strict with the terms and history. didnt mean to come off rude, you were on the right track with your info just thought i would add to it.

It's Horiyoshi, with a Y, and it's not called "horiyoshi" style... Horiyoshi III is simply a third generation, well known, traditional Japanese tattoo artist. That "style" is usually just called "Japanese" style tattooing in America.
Many artists experiment with combining different styles together, such as japanese tattooing with more "new-school" techniques of layout and coloring, like the girl who posted pictures of her flowers and stuff. That is not traditional japanese tattooing...

This is true traditional japanese stuff...

Are you on the Market by chance?

Im 14 and the legal age to get a tattoo in Ireland is 16 but i want to get one of my Grandad who passed away in January. Is there a reason for having an age thing for tattoo's or can i get one? Im thinking on the right side of my chest.

Wow, you guys are so technical. Nice work aclockworkorange! I really dig the colors and the strong lines. I'm so nontraditional with my ink, I have a red seadragon with wings, web feet surrounded by green smoke and fire on my arm. I wish I started with a theme but, I'm a sailor. I just fit them all together.

Same reason there is an age of consent. You aren't an adult yet, so being able to decide about something PERMANENT or life altering is not something they feel everyone is capable of thinking out and assessing properly.

Teenagers go through phases. So, you may change your mind, and then what? You can't do anything about it because it's too late.

I need this thread for some inspiration since my wife gave me a $500 gift certificate yesterday for my birthday and I'm not 100% sure exactly what I want to get yet.

what style are you interested in? i think that would help you get more ideas if folks know what style or and idea of what you like.
