Hi everyone,

Every since Ive added driftwood as my main decor in my tank, the DW seems to be leaching tannin into the water.

The wood had already been in a tank when I bought it, but it took me longer than expected to set the tank up and the wood dried up. I do major water changes every one or two weeks, and the water is still quite dark.

I have quite a bit of carbon in there to help clear the colour up, but no luck!

Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks

Polak

waterchange watherchange waterchange. thats all that really will help. just keep up what you are doing and it will go away. im going through the same thing, i added another 12 or so pounds of driftwood, and in just a few days after waterchanges, it looks like someoned peed in the tank, haha. it will go away with time.

:iagree: water changes will definitely help and I've read that carbon will as well. :)

lol oooh no
I was hoping there was a miracle cure... actually speaking of, my lfs said theres a chemical you can add to clear things up. Generally I stay away from adding things which arent absolutely necessary, has anyone used something like this before?

thanx for the input, I think Ill add some more carbon though to speed things up.

lfs will try to sell you chemicals for anything, but imo about 95% of them are unnecessary and simply a waste of money. I'd step up the water changes before adding any chemicals, but that's just me.

yer, pet shops will sell you anything, theres even a chemical to make your water go brown like that!! its meant to be good for amazon fish
ps. my surnames polak too, i live in NSW

Yea I didnt think the chemicals were too good an idea.
I went away after my last post and washed some carbon and added it to my sump - ill see if it helps at all.
Ill also step up the water changes.

Thanx for the quick replies!

Casper, my surname is actually Mazurek - I just sign out as polak bcoz if I write my name here people will probably spend more time trying to work out how to read it rather than post ;)

The tea colored water wont hurt the fish any,in fact for some species its a plus,so your regular waterchanges will remove it eventually. If the color upsets you then yes the carbon will do the job quicker

Keep all British natives away from your tank, they might have an urge to drink from your aquarium. Then they'll be asking you for one lump or 2, and watching cartoons all my life, we know how that goes....

Ya, water chages are the only way to go... well besides adding the carbon. Personally I like the look of the "tea water". looks way more natural that way.
