The fx5 will stop for around a minute every 24 hours to let out all trapped air. It then resets itself and runs as normal. Will that 1 minute hurt the sterilizer? Also how much of a drop in GPH should I see after the UV is added? The FX5 is full of media.

As long as there is water in it for that one minute should be no problem.

Flow isn't degraded very much (a gal. or 3) as it is a flow-thru design (within reason), problem lies in pushing too much water thru the UV and diminishing its effectiveness.

Dr. Joe,
I got the Turbo Twist listed for 400-1200 GPH which I believe the FX5 probabaly falls right around 600 GPH fully loaded with Media. I know the FX5 is listed above 900 GPH however I think with Media a 33% decrease in flow is probably correct. If you have so insight into where the flow from that filter actually is I would appreciate the info!

Hi everyone. After hearing about the wonders of the "UV Sterilizer," I have decided to purchase a turbo twist. Unfortunately, I have no Idea how to install such a contraption. I have tried looking up how, but its too advanced for me to understand. I know that the Turbo Twist comes with as a hang on but can it also be attached to a cannister? As far as I know, I have to cut the return tube from the xp3 and put each end of the tube onto the UV sterilizer. I also heard that this decreases flow rate, which I don't really want. I don't want to have to buy another filter for the Turbo twist, so are there any other solutions? As far a hang on goes, I hear that I need a powerhead. Please, If anyone can explain the setup in simplest terms, or pictures, It would help enormously.

Get one of these. Problem solved.

I'd say that's a good guesstimate, if you could find a flowmeter in that range (rather expensive to buy, solar water heater shops should have them, maybe you could rent one).

Or just go with it, as soon as the filter starts getting dirty flow will slow down :D .

I am just going to go with it. I will be installing either tomorrow night or thursday night. I got the piece today and I must say the Dr Foster Smith does a HELL of a packing job! The box and packaging alone must have been pretty pricey however I guess you get what you pay for!

The hang on method with the power head is the easiest way. Are you talking fresh or salt/reef? If salt don't run it all the time, only for a few days after the introduction of a new animal. If fresh, I guess you would run it all the time I guess, (I'm a reefer just getting back into the large freshwater carnivores after a six year break). But definately don't run it on the effluent of your canister, and use a small powerhead. The longer the water is exposed to the UV the better.

For my tank I will not be able to add any more circulation like a power head...I already have 2 FX5's on a 150 tall. Overkill is my middle name...The UV will be on one of the FX5's and hopefully it does a great job!

Eric, I searched the entire WWW (copied it to my hard drive so it's faster) for pix of your tank but came up empty...what can you do about it? :D

I am making a custom backround right now. This is the before pic. This is previous to the second FX5 install...It only has a FX5 and a 404 on it in this pic.
