Tegu cage building thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so are you making a stand?
i have a design in my head for one. i got the idea at work but what we did was, build just the 2x4 and 3x4 stands, and then just drill plywood to the sides and it looks awesome. like it was built into the wall. on some of them we went up to the ceiling with the same concept. it looks tight when painted.

@Conner-yes that is the permanent color for the outside atleast. The paint is fresh and it is outside which is why it looks so bright. It is darker indoors.

@HIPIZZLE- no need for a stand. The 2x4"s keep the "floor" elevated off the ground and serve as a little stand.

update: brought all the wood inside except for the biggest pieces. The wood is very light for it's size and I can actually lift the floor with one foot . Will bring the big pieces in tommorrow morning and then I can start to build :D.

tip: exspect to spend a bit more than you assumed if you are a beginner.

these tips are sweet and totally help BTW.
im hoping to get my tegu from varnyard herps soon. i need to make a deposit so i can get him.

Glad this is helpfull to you and I hope when you build yours you do it 20% better. You won't be disapointed with a varnyard tegu. They are the sweetest little things around.

So this morning I brought the big pieces in. I was fortunate enough to have some help from my mom. It wasn't too bad. It's lighter then you would think. Maybe like carrying a bed frame. Anyway here are some pics, will start assembling it in a bit.

tip...
Get as much extre help as possible. I had to work pretty much on my own so it was a little hard on me. It would have been easier to have atleast one extra pair of hand helping me.

pics... and a vid of riley demolishing some supers. He is seriously outgrowing the whole insect thing. It's time for him to move to big boy foods.

I can't wait to see this completed!

Your tegu looks amazing! They are deff on my list of reps to get in the future. Almost got one instead of my rhino igg. How old is yours?

@Mike D- It's coming along! My tegu is somewhere close to a year old now. Probably like 10 months. He hibernated for like 5months so he hasn't had alot of growth time. This summer he will really put on size which is why I started building so early. I want it done so I don't have to worry about it later.

It's almost done. I think I will add one more component to the door before installing the roof but everythign else is on and I will be wiring soon also. So far I have descided to use the glass I have and construct a glass door but that will be a bit later. Also the decor will come a bit later but I will come back to this thread when I add those components.

What I have found unusual is that Riley usually sleeps most of the day but the whole time I was in there he was roaming his enclosure and watching me. You would think he would be detered by the noise but he seemed very curious. I think he knows it's his...

tip...
Don't give up...

you are making quick progress.

Thanks... that was a compliment right?

Anyway after long and hard thinking I have descided to use plexi gkass. The glass sheets I have turned out to be too short for my enlosure and plexi will be easier. I will just get it pre cut whenever I go to the hardware store... which might be awile. I have been working alot and the cage has been built in just 4days more or less. But there is still work to be done. I was rushing a bit because I didn't want the plywood outside long and I have stuff that's supposed to go on top of the wood. I am pretty much out of funds so the project is at a bit of a hault. But I will come back to this thread when I continue. For now not much to do but wait.

okay, totally honest opinion:

I think that it is going to work great and your Tegu will absolutely love it but at the same time, it seems like an eyesore. I understand that you are not experienced with building things (and believe me neither am I) but I think that if you slow down and try and make it look nicer with another layer of paint or laminate. I just think that since it looks like you have such a nice house, you should make your Tegus house look just as nice.

I am not trying to bash you or anything and I really think that you are doing a much better job than I could and certainly much more quickly than I could. No hard feelings. Just constructive criticism.
