Very true...I usually prefer to hear real life experiences versus what "the book" says.

Dats are great fish. They are one of those fish where once you start, you can't stop.

They can be very shy at times so you have to be willing to tolerate an "empty tank" at times. This usually changes with age. I've noticed that out of all my dats my NTTs are by far the most shy and my ATs are VERY robust. My ITs will show up one by one as I enter the room but will scatter quickly if I make a fast move or get to close to the tank.

As far as feeding...a lot of them have to be weaned off of live foods. Most lfs will feed them guppies, or something of the sort, but they can be switched to frozen/prepared foods with a little effort. I've used smaller, very active fish to stimulate the dats into trying prepared foods and I've sucess with that.

Josh mentioned the different species of dats...here is a good reference for identifiying what dat you are interested in or what your lfs has available:

exactly I beleive people with personal experence is the best reaseach cuz last time I did a google search on silver aros it said min tank size was 75-125 gallons Im looking at getting either st or id depending on availability how many could I start of either (just want one species as a community) in my 150 and upgrading to an 8x2x2 tank to end I hear they are slow growers but thats about it

I'm thinking up putting some dats with my black aro in the 180 im getting in the summer, I just dont know how many. The 180 is going to be used as a growout for two years, then I will be buying a 375 gallon.

But my problem is, in the 375 There will also be two silver arowanas along with the black arowana.

I really like IT and ST dats, I was thinking three of either kind to go along with the black aro in the 180 and then three aro's in the 375?

I have heard 3 is not enough to break up the aggression. Seems like most Dat groups are 5 or so. I know I put 2 together and it was a mess. I didn't get the impression that by adding just one more would get them to settle down. So I'm now thinking of getting 3 more to balance it out. Right now my two little guys are seperated.

In the 90Gal my 9" IT is with a single NTT about 4" they seem to do fine as long as the little guys hides all day. But from what "Kenya" says the NTT is used to be hiding so that combo works in my tank. But I have a feeling that if I added a single IT and it tried to come out the 9"er would beat him up pretty badly.

I cant speak for other tanks, just my 4 dats.

That kinda sucks, I wish you could mix dats, i kind of want an IT, ST and NGT

so how many It should I start with in my 150 so that they could eventually live nicly in a 240... starting to think 265 cuz I like the taller look
