Very true...I usually prefer to hear real life experiences versus what "the book" says.
Dats are great fish. They are one of those fish where once you start, you can't stop.
They can be very shy at times so you have to be willing to tolerate an "empty tank" at times. This usually changes with age. I've noticed that out of all my dats my NTTs are by far the most shy and my ATs are VERY robust. My ITs will show up one by one as I enter the room but will scatter quickly if I make a fast move or get to close to the tank.
As far as feeding...a lot of them have to be weaned off of live foods. Most lfs will feed them guppies, or something of the sort, but they can be switched to frozen/prepared foods with a little effort. I've used smaller, very active fish to stimulate the dats into trying prepared foods and I've sucess with that.
