sometimes i turn the filter off during a water change cause the water gets low and the filter starts running dry

It would depend on what I'm doing. For water changes I will turn off everything for cleaning/maintenance, but for moving some decor around or fishing out leftover food with a net, everything stays on.

Nope, never do. Most of the time I leave it all on during water changes to because I add as I subtract so the water level never drops much. It's easier that way.

everything stays on unless im doing a water change, then and only then is the pump turned off in my sump along with my UV sterilizer and heaters..
