Temperature fluctuating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its always way easier to heat stuff up than cool it off. one idea i have seen for a DIY chiller, is take airline tubing and create a siphon in it and have it run through a mini fridge. you can drill a small hole just big enough to fit the airline hose through. little mini fridges are really affordable now. but again, it will not work for tanks in different rooms.

Hmmm I do have a mini fridge not in use! good idea. Its my main tank that seems to get the warmest but in reality this hopefully wont be a big deal once I get the crane guy to put the new amana gas pack on the roof ill install it after work with the help of a few of my guys and the house goes back to 82 degrees which I think is tolerable for the fish. Right now inside the thermostat said 90 degrees in the unlit hallway with no windows (Should be the coolest place in the house.

you will need lots of airline tubing and may need to decide on the tank at the highest risk

:screwy: NM too much work im putting the AC on next Wednesday I believe . Thank you for the suggestion though.

PS does anyone know if this 18 hour temperature swing is detrimental to the fish?

I gotta see air cooling go below Ambient!!
What are the fish doing? Is there any noticable difference in their behavior?
the warmer the water the less it will have disolved O2 in it...maybe an airstone if they look like they are gulping...

BTW what fish are we talking here?

I agree it does not make sense blowing room temperature air over the tank but if it gets too hot inside ( Lighting pumps etc) A screen top increases evaporation and then in turn cools the tank this is just what I read it could be BS

do a test and see, I'm getting curious now...wonder how much water would have to Phase-change to vapor to get any cooling effect other than on the surface?...You know? to get deep cooling? maybe if like the water was really shallow like on a swamp cooler...

What fish are we concerened here with Bro?

you can always do W/C with cooler water if nessasary too...

personally, if the temp wont rise above 86, i might not be too worried.

if you think about it, naturally, the temps of the waters will rise and fall quite a bit with the sun everyday. the temp swing sounds bad, but its not happening in a period of a minute or two which will cause temp shock. the temps will rise and fall slow enough that i think the fish would have enough time to adjust. barring you dont have any extremely sensitive fish that wont like the high temps

as was mentioned, people turn their temps upto the mid 80's for ick treatments and what not, so im not entirely sure it will be a problem in your case.

I am most concerned for my Africans mostly my haps I got a livingstonni and a ton of other semi expensive Africans but they all seem to be doing fine. The AC will be dropped off soon I cant wait to hook that son of a ****** up :headbang2
I got me a 2 stage amana also dual zones I got my living room (With 5 out of 6 of my tanks) on its own thermostat hehe so I can keep that room at 78

The fan cooling would be from evaporation. It would depend on humidity, fans can increase the speed of evaporation, IF the humidity in the air isn't too high already. This is why they don't use swamp coolers in Chicago, the humidity gets too high for them to be efficient. Above 40% humidity swamp coolers won't work worth using, they just raise the humidity when you're already miserable from the heat. Swamp coolers only work in the desert.
