I just caught a 10 inch LMB and put him in my tank. He's by himself. What temperature should I keep the tank at? I know they dont need the water as warm as chiclids. should i just turn the heaters off and let it stay at room temp. right now it's at 76.

Psst Psst I'm not sure if its totally illegal to catch LMB and turn them into pets, but Seeing as how they are a game fish it is not acceptable in the eyes of fish and game. I won't tell if you don't tell, though. :D LMB thrive in a wide array of temperatures, from mid 50's to temps of 80. It is what they encounter in the wild, and they can handle it. However, For them to thrive, it should not be too warm or too cold. Going to the extremes will slow down their metabolic process and the function of their organs. Find a decent temperature where the fish will eat, poop, act normal and doesnt get sick and leave it @ that. Then you can build yourself a native tank!
good luck

Psst back. I caught it out of my friends pond. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm legal with what i did, but thanks for your concern.

warmer tempatures will make them grow quicker.. what size tank do you have em in and when do you plan on upgrading (unless you already have a 300g or so)? tankmates? and pictures please!

76 is fine. I wouldn't keep it much higher than that though, since they tend to spazz out at higher temps, not to mention they eat a whole lot more (which is a lot in the first place).

It's in a 75 gallon right now. Im in negotitations with a friend right now for his 125. Here's the pics.

Nice LMB. LMB should be kept between 70-85. But as others have suggested the Bass get hungrier, quicker, and meaner at the higher end of the temperature spectrum.

For black bass in general... LMB prefer warm water and SMB prefer cooler water, this is one of the reasons you should avoid keeping LMB and SMB in the same tank and expect them both to thrive. The rest of the Sunfish family do well in any temp and are great additions to a LMB or SMB tank.

i'll have to get me one of those. We call them "Achigans" in these here parts....
