all of mine have taken pellets with in about a week. once they get used to 'what hits the water is food' they will devour pellets. though i never got any of mine at 10inches always smaller so the larger one might already be acustomed to live food only. but you can night crawlers at the surface and if he will come up to those it will be only a matter of time untill he comes up for pellets

I don't use heaters on any of my natives, just keep them room temp.
The bass I had in the past always attacked any food droped into the tank regardless of who was in the room, your bass should get less spooky as time goes on.

I just feed him 2 nightcrawlers. He didn't eat them right away. I took him a couple of minutes.

your bass is a good size he could possibly eat a small feeder mouse (if your into that) or a lizard i have had good luck with the dried shrimp that float also and crickets gotta love the top water action;)

I feed a bass I had as a kid a bee, and I think it stong him. Bcause he darted around the tank shaking his head, and would not eat a bug off the serface for quite some time.
Other then that I never had a problem.
I still think your bass will get over his shyness, and eat in front of you, right away.

I put in a dozen gold fish and the same thing. He ate them over 2 nights. He eats night crawlers from the bottom after a minute or so. I want to feed him a mouse. maybe after a few more weeks and not feeding him for a day or so.

i would not recommend feeding your bass a mouse because the mouse could scratch and or bite your bass causing serious harm or even death

Times like this I'm glad I'm not a moderator here anymore.

I havent tried feeding him pellets yets. Do they take to pellets easy?

Mine did but mine was the size of my thumbnail when I got it, probably never even ate another fish. Even now he will only eat pellets. If he gets worms they need to be chopped, he won't eat an entire nightcrawler. He typically spits out frozen and pays no attention to any fish, very passive. Perfect bass for the home aquaria.

As for the use of live animals as fish food. I oppose it. It is harmful for the fish and unhealthy and is torture for the prey animal in question. I don't understand why people would want to do it. I cannot possably imagine having a life so pathetic that I would get kicks out of watching a friggin fish dispatch a rodent. I respect the LMB as a highly adaptable fish and that includes its wide ranging diet. The'll take anything. Small alligators, lizards, frogs, birds (even a bluejay in one story I heard)...whatever is small enough. Still though it is not something I ever need to see or replicate in an aquarium.
