test driving a car without intention of buying it in the near future

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah I read it, whats your point? people are free to do what they want, to a point. its a damn car. I think its ok to do it.

perhaps im just pond scum though

Ha ha...hope F1 didn't do too much of that though.

anyone that condones useless joyrides is useless in my book...
wow glad you think im useless despite the fact that ive provided my family with 2 vehicle(paid for), a house(paid for), a rv(paid for),5 acres of land(paid for), a steady income, and above all unconditional love.

mighty big ofyou to call countless members in this thread alone "useless"

Absolutely go test drive the vehicle. There is nothing wrong with test driving with no intention to buy immediately how else do you know if the truck performs the way you want it to. I have a 2001 f250 that I love and I drove the 2009's with my father and I hated the thing my 01' just felt better. So I kept the f 250 and ended up going with a 07 Sierra 1500. I just tell the salesmen straight up that this is one of my options I'm not going to make a deal today I'm trying to get a feel of what I like the best. Then keep the salesman's name and when your ready go to him if you want to. But if he was a jerk go to someone else. This happens all the time it's not a big deal to them.

Hello; I had a 1977 GMC sierra. Ran good if the carb was adjusted and rebuilt often enough. Lots of small parts issues. Much rust to the point of replacing fenders and patching the cab floor. Poor MPG. However, it was very easy to work on when compared to todays trucks. I just had to work on it much more often.

It's all relative and depends on motivation and goals... New carb with a two year warranty is around $300. Rust, like with any 40 year old hunk of steel, can be an issue, so inspect before you buy (need to get some of those desert cars!). As far a fuel economy goes, obviously that depends. Throw a fuel injected small block under the hood from the scrapyard or even convert a diesel and throw old French fry oil in it.

Now that said I have been looking at the 2014 silverados. :) I am leery about buying any first year updated model so I'm not sure what I'll do. Probably wait until next year.

That's kinda how I'm looking at it also but by the time I'll be able to buy if any problems arise in it they should be resolved by then. They already had one recall for airbags and seats

Hello; I also tend to stay away from a new model or updated model for a year or so. Gives them time to find some of the problems that new stuff often will have. I do test drive most all similar models I am interested in.
I do have some questions about the cylinder de-activation process that GM is using. That and the turbo chargers that Ford is using seem likely to be expensive problem areas if they do not hold up.
I may not need another truck, but will check out and test drive any brands that are likely to be a fit for my needs. I am looking to replace a car andhave test driven several models so far. It may be a while longer before i buy, but have been able to remove some from consideration.

Most of my buddies that sell cars really don't care if someone is coming just to test drive without the intention of buying because they just want you to come in. They're pretty cocky and think they can sell the non customer anyway. And yes they can play games but most of it is trying to get more people involved with the sale. Make no mistake their job is to buy your trade in for as little as possible and sell you a car for as much as they can. I myself would never buy new.

Earlier this year, I was browsing the jeep dealership just checking out the wranglers...no intention to buy. Car sales person came up and asked if I wanted to take it for a test drive, declined at first but he insisted anyways. I figured I had time to burn and got the ok from wife to test drive it, so I figured "wth, don't have anything better to do".

...that was a fun test drive going through the field and getting it muddy before returning it...
