TEST!!! SOMEONE TOLD ME YOU GUYS KNOW YOUR STUFF!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well done you! From what i'm being told though it could only be a matter of time before trouble happens. Maybe only another 2-3" to grow. So just watch out, i think i'm gonna have to redo all my stock.
I'm gonna try and keep 2-3x Sevs amd then just have a wee look and see what else people are doing. Any pics?

What everybody here knows but hasnt really mentioned, is that every mix of large cichlids is a risk. Just because it works for someone else doesnt mean it will work for you. The above post proves this - 7" Red Devil, 8" Jag , no aggression !! Most large CA's can be either killers or pussycats depending on the individual, so whatever you decide you wont know if it'll work till you try it, and even then they could all be peacefull till they get big, or someone matures, etc, then you could have problems. This is part of the 'fun'. Just make sure you can offload them if you have to. But apart from being a neccessary 'plan B', this also makes it easier, because you can try stuff knowing that if it doesnt work its not a big problem.

Personally I would stay away from salvini - all the ones I've had have been professional mouth-wrestlers - unless everything else is much bigger.

Btw, assuming your tank will have about 20" depth of water in it, it will be about 90 gallons(UK), or 110 US. A 72x24x18 is 18 cubic feet, but allowing for thickness of glass (about 10 gallons), a realistic fill level (not right to the top), and a bit of decor, you're looking at about 90 gallons.

I'm in Carlisle. If you can get to Maidenhead Aquatics here they have quite a few CA's - medium argentea, red devils (nice but rarely peaceful), JD's, and 1"-2" young of a few spp.
I've got 5-6" synspila pairing up, so I will shortly have 2 of these going free to a good home if you're interested, also a 5" Thorichthys ellioti (firemouth group but pretty peacefull) and a 6" Geo. altifrons (probably too peaceful).

If you do go for just a pair of festae be careful, because 99% of young sold as festae in UK are urophthalmus - just as beautiful IMO, and a lot less aggressive.

Hey, nice to have a post from someone nearby. I think i might do this with the tank:

2x Sev, 1x JD, 2-4X Convicts and maybe 1x Green Terror(however that would probaly mean getting rid of the Sevs but they do stick up for themselves)

What you up so late for, you on night shift aswell. :(

Just had a quick look at your Synspila, beautiful!

I'm just trying to get some good sized fish, but my real problem is light. 5ft luminaire is doing my wifes head in, so thats up for sale. Think i'm gonna take all theplants out and use LEDS i need to build a hood aswell.:nilly:

If that is a pic of them and they are truly only 1 inch long i just cant see how that is their fry, could it be a pic of them still with their parents and the fry is a new batch from their parents? also im not sure when these guys color up but they seem to have more color than the 1in cichlids im used to seeing (but thats CAs so they may color up slower), i dont really see a problem with that stock other than stick to only 2 convicts and if possible get sevs of the same sex so you dont have them breeding as well as the cons, Sevs should def be able to stand up to a GT they get about the same size as well so as long as you dont get the random "KILL EVERYTHING IN TANK" GT you should be fine, i have a forming pair in my tank and while they are the semi-bosses of the tank (only fish out ranking them is robertsoni thats twice their size so will probably change once they get some size to them) the only aggression i see is the occasional gill flaring if another fish gets to close but they don't go around chasing other fish with the intent to kill or even really nip others fins

Thanks Sarah88, i'm not about those fish either. But i've put all of them up for sale, so if you hear of anyone looking let me know.
