Guys that are complaining about agriculture/crops destroying the environment, just remember nothing lives without plants. Plants make their own food, animals do not. Plants are at the bottom of the food chain, they feed the herbivores that feed the carnivores. Plant production is more important than meat production. No plants= no life.
Well our ancestors don't survive by on twigs and berries.

Its not really debatable whether our meat industry is good for the environment. Cows take a huge amount of land, water, and feed to grow; only a small part of this is converted to muscle while the rest is waste. With a growing population worldwide we're going to have to change something. I agree with you(MN) on hunting and fishing for the species that are over populated like deer and invasive boar. I also think these test tube grown burgers are a great opportunity for us as a whole and correct me if I'm wrong but are these even genetically modified? As far as I can tell they are normal cow cells grown in a lab.

AND?
nobody is "complaining" about crops. merely pointing out that meat production does not cause a disproportionate level of environmental damage- in & of itself-, as propagandists would have people to believe.

LOL, @aclockwork.
mine too. I can't believe how some people [don't] think.
Imagine thousands & millions of acres of big arena-style buildings containing lab dishes to grow "eco-friendly" meat that only monsanto could dole out to feed millions of people.
and our lives would depend on That?

To be fair the crops really take up a huge amount of land and the water as well than average cattle pastures. You really needs to take a road trip out in the country. Think where your fruits and vegetables come from. They don't come from a small acreage farm. Where I live, there are more cornfields, soybean fields, potato fields, strawberry fields and bean fields than the livestock pastures. Not mentioned that there are also more tree farms...

As for the test-tube beef as GM...well it was created in the laboratory far from being natural.

I simply stated that test-tube beef has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of meat production, which IS a major cause of environmental destruction, whether you believe the UN report I posted is "cherry picking" or not...

As I'm sure you know, beef need to be fed. Aren't most cows fed corn...and likely GM corn? And corn that's cultivated using herbicides, pesticides, fertilizer and all other chemicals that boost yield?

Matt

Why is that you thinks that meat industry is a major issue to YOU but didn't bring up other major issues that caused environment destruction? My point is that you have been cherry picking the information that you want the whole time.

Your argument is that you thinks its a great idea to introduce the test-tube beef to the food industry because of the environmental issues. But you are using products that is harmful to the environment and the GM foods are not even safe products and pose a threat to the environment or the health. Not mentioned that this fake beef was never tested if there are no negative side-effects from eating a lab product. And we still have overabundance of food supply here and there's plenty of alternatives (environment-safe and health reasons). If you want blame on beef industry for the environment destruction, go after the urbanites whose never set a foot on a country land before and they are reason why the agriculture demands are high.

While we are at it we can give 100% of our paychecks to the government and then we can get "correct" rations of this "meat" so we can beat the "obesity epidemic" once and for all.

what's scary is how much of our food crops can no longer be reproduced via using their own seed anymore.
All this "Progress" is more about Govt control than production yield. one snap of the fingers and none of those farmers can even grow ANYthing next year.
Think about that and ask if how comfortable you feel.
