I enjoy doing it for chuckles and to see if they are honest.

First thing i do is a inspect all the fish, see if i find a sick one. I ask the man/woman that's playing the shift and ask them what kind of fish it is, about 95% of the time s/he has to go look at the label. Than if it is sick i say, is this fish healthy? All petsmarts and petcos say, "no, he is fine" or whatever. I used to live in Dubai, UAE and there was a LFS about a 10 min ride from my house, i had just bought an oscar, so i needed some appropriate food, i asked the employee if this could be fed to oscar fish (on the front label, there was a large picture of an oscar), they spent around 10 minutes until i had to tell them it was on the front, they blushed. But either way, i have found a very trustworthy petshop that nags their customers of their tank size, water quality and other inhabitants. They can spit out scientific names like it's their alphabet and are very kind. The petshop is called Pets place II and is located in Nanuet, NY. I think this article is useful to test your lfs and see which is the best to buy fish from. Good luck

Or, you could do proper research yourself and learn what you need to know before you buy anything. Even if a LFS passes one of your stupid little tests, there is no guarantee that you will be provided with correct info by them on what you don't know.

PetSmart and Petco are going to exist whether their individual employees know their stuff or not. I am not so rich that I can afford to bypass them entirely. I do patronize the two local lfs's(and they are lfs's, no dogs, cats, lizards) for the great majority of my supplies and nearly all my fish. I rely on my 40+ years of fishkeeping experience, although I'm still learning all the time. I've even had a puppy or two teach me stuff, lol.

It's just a way to test the waters. Of course, you should already know about the fish, i mean this is to see if they are a reliable source.

It sounds like a waste of time to me! But it's your time, not mine, so go ahead!

i do it when i am bored

When I worked in lfs', any customer that presented him/herself as a condescending PITA usually got the "It's already sold and on hold" for whatever they wanted.
Customers that were pleasant with the staff received liberal price cuts for repeat business, forcasts of what was coming in, and the effort to obtain them the species they were looking for. It's always best to treat others as you wish to be treated.
