Testing your LFS/petsmart's knowledge

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ahh i dont grill the poor lfs people. i figure its my responsibility to know what i keep, and all that is entailed in their keeping. i love researching fish and learning their compatibility. now, if i hear someone being told something obviously wrong like "Sure, the pacu and oscar will work in a 45 gallon" ill butt in and give a little guidance-but in a polite way, and i dont take offense if they dont listen.. its their money.

I'm in full agreement with your points. It's not fair to abuse people who work in an lfs. Everytime I go to Petsmart or Petco, I can always tell that I have more fish knowledge than most of their employees, but I treat them with respect. I don't talk to them in a condescending manner. It's my responsibility to know what I'm buying. I don't need to bash someone or play head games with them, in order to make myself feel good.

To test ones knowledge, wouldn't you have to possess that knowledge first?

Definitely. But you can get a feel for how good new knowledge from them might or might not be.

Ya maybe so, just don't think the LFS is the ideal place to gain knowledge.

Too much time on your hands, I do not feel it is my task in life to quiz folks that are making minimum wage and trying to make a living.

Where do you work, how knowledgable are you on every aspect of every product you sell or service?

haha that is a really good idea. i go to a very good fish store called moby dicks. they know every thing and they are very nice they have everything memorized. i actually might work there when im 14.

ZOMG that's right near where I live. Shopped there quite a few times, and the only problem I ever had with them was that they had a featherback knife labeled as an african. That being, I would still love to work there if they happened to be hiring.

I haven't had a problem with a Petsmart either, but the people in there just seem to be less educated than at Moby Dick's.

I kinda agree with both sides. Testing lfs knowledge kinda makes you look like a d-bag, and sometimes (only if the store is blatantly ignorant in their treatment of fish) it's kinda fun. Once in a blue moon you get a good hearted employee who admits defeat and admits that they have to lie to sell. Once this happened and the employee told me I should work with fish in a lab...LOL

i'm not gonna step into the ethics debate in this thread, but i was at the LFS last night looking for some elodea and vallisneria, and when she said she didn't have any i asked to see what all she had, and she took me over to the tanks with plants in it and she pointed at a bunch of hornwort and said it was java fern...:screwy: i just kept my mouth shut and let her continue showing me the plants she had. i ended up buying some java moss. this was the owner i was dealing with too, not some employee.
