Tetras for my geophagus tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 6 black neons and 20 pristella (all less than 1 in) in my 120G with 1 heckelii and 4 pindare. My heckelii has has never bothered any of my smaller fish- he/she is very peaceful- shoaled with the smaller pindare and bolivans. I've since moved the heckelii in with my oscar and severums- because I felt the heckelii would take it ok- not because there was a problem with the heckelii and the smaller fish. I worry most about my large festivum with the small tetras- I'm certain he/she killed off some m. praecox of the same size. Every fish is different though.

That's already 11 Geophagus/Satanoperca plus 2 A. heckelii in a 75g. 13 fish that eventually will get around 8-10". I assume you are going to upgrade to a bigger tank soon before adding three dozen more fish? It might work better if you get the tank set up first, decide on the decorations (plants, wood etc), then pick a tetra species that works/looks best.

No offense. Just my 2c.

I think the black neons would work with the possible exception of the heckelli. I am going to try probably bleeding hearts or serpaes and silver hatchets...I have sevs, festivums, and jurupari. My only worry is the chalceus in there, I'm told it might pick off the hatchets and/or tets though the 4 I've kept in my time in the hobby never touched small fish (feeders etc).

im surprised no one has mentioned it until you peter but yes, that is a large amount of fish in a 75g tank. consider upgrading or decreasing your stock before adding any thing else

black neons are only just over an inch long
japes is the man on this
but i think 50 is a bit extreme to maybe 30

It would not be just the 30-50 tetras in a 75g.

It would be 30-50 tetras in addition to 13 fish that will soon be 8-10" long in a 75g.

Japes is the man on what? Overstocking? Have you seen how many Geos Japes has in his 75g and thought about why they are doing so well?
