Teugelsi being a jerk!

They are NOT NOCTURNAL, lol..... My polys sleep with the lights are off :) I think the misconception is that fish may go missing at night. It due them resting at the bottom when lights are off at night. That's when polys become opportunistic.
I don't know man, mine are definitely really active when lights are out, and a lot of people have reported theirs preferring to eat with lights out. Besides that, just about every species profile on the net describes them as nocturnal. I'm not saying that everything on the internet is true, but several reputable sources along with many keepers' experiences seem to suggest they're nocturnal.

If you have time sit and observe for awhile culprit may start up again.
I've been snowed in today and have been down with my fish a lot, but haven't seen anything.

We are getting some of that too. It is crazy how things work out you are home and the fish decide to be peaceful. Hope you fiind out soon though who was doing the fin nipping.

Glad your getting to the source. Didn't think a Teug is capable. It's just not their nature. If there are poly keepers here.

polys are not nocturnal? This is good news!

ShanerBock888 ShanerBock888 , sorry to hear that the fin nipping is spreading. Are there any polys without the nipped fins? Maybe set up a poly cam?

nah all 3 polys in that tank have nipped fins, which is why I'm thinking it's the only other tankmate - the chocolate cichlid. Not characteristic of the species but it's the only thing that seems to make sense as of now

Man cichlids have a mind of there own. I swear no two are alike.

Try and sit will the tank and room lights off with some ambient light from another room. Dont sit too close to the tank either. Sorry man seems like agression is contagious im dealing with some too

Yeah seriously. That's exactly why I've never been too interested in them, I just hate having aggression in my tanks. But I read about chocolates saying they're perfectly peaceful and this is what I get. I'm thinking of moving him over to my 125 that has my clown knife, ID sharks, sun cats and giraffe cat. (and yes I know this tank won't house them for life - before anyone gets started lol) He'll be the smallest fish by far so I doubt he'd cause any problems, and if he did he'd get put in his place fast.

Polys in the WILD are nocturnal. Starvation will drive them out to hunt during the daylight hours. My prior mention is in regards to 'domestic polys'. Such as the ones we keep in our glass boxes. In my opinion, most are active during the daylight hours, and sleepy with lights off at night. :-)

thanks for enlightening us with some facts. Vancouver is always dropping knowledge. heheh at the "domesticated poly." So true, but makes me think of a fat house cat or a happy lung fish. happy polys :D
