Hi,

I was just wondering how aggressive peoples texas cichlids are, what size tank they're in and what you keep them with? I'm asking this as mine is just settling in to my cichlid community, hes in with various other juvenille cichlids.

Escondido in my opinion are the most aggressive and beautiful-when I had mine I kept him with Female Dovii, Male Black Belt, RD, and Trimac-ofcourse that was in a 240 gallon tank.

Not much help with your question, but:

I have a 1.5" texas in a 29 grow out tank with a convict.
I have had him for two months and he has not grown much.
he has goog water, food, etc..

Are Texas cichlids slow growers?

Thanks!

I am not aware of them being slow growers as I have only had mine a week. Perhaps upgrade the tank early to a something like a 55-75 gallon? What are escondido, I have not heard of them.
Thanks

I have a Green Texas and I have had him about a month and he has only grown a half inch. He's not aggressive yet but he is the smallest Cichlid in the tank. He will be calling a 55g home after he grows a little more and his tank mate will be a JD who is now about 3.5 inches. I have heard this is a difficult combo as the Texas and JDs do not like fish that are similar in body shape and color as themselves.

Hi eveyone, I'm new here but I wanted to chime in on this. I have an 8 inch Green Texas in a 75 gal with 3 very small clown loaches, and this fish rivals any Midas I've ever owned as far as arression goes. When siphoning the tank I expect to bleed!! He is beautiful but his temperment is quite ugly.
I'm really not sure if this is typical of the species or not as most I've seen are quite shy.
Hope this helps.

They can be extremely aggressive. But it will just depend upon the individual fish though. I have a carpintis escondido pair in a 90g with a pair of marbled convicts and a geo sp red bahia. My pair is still young but the male is growing really fast, the female not as much. My tank has stacked slate rock to break up visual lines or the texas would kill the other fish. They are quite brutal, even to each other.

All texas cichlids are known to be bullies and will relentlessly pick on any fish weaker then them. They are often stupid enough to try to pick fights with fish they cannot hang with as well resulting in a terrible beating or death for themself.

I had a carpintis Texas for several months, he was pretty aggressive during the day. But at night he became a real threat to his tank mates. Real sneaky and persistent attacker. He would hide behind plants and take cheap shots on the other fish almost non stop. I eventually gave him away.

All true! Especially if the Carp/Escon feels threatened! Very aggressive fish.

If you can jump up to a 75g do that! That way you don't spend money on a 55g, then later (cause you will have to) buy a 75g.

mine is pretty aggressive not shure if cyano or carpinte he will attack my hand through the glass
