texas cichlid

I saw several 6-8" texas "carpinte" cichlids at the LFS that customers brought back.
Hmmm...wonder why?,its because they can turn into real tank busters.

I've owned several and none of them ever approached 10",a very beautiful cichlid though.
 
im thinking about getting a texas cichlid but i dont know much about them....
QUESTIONS!
how do you tell male from female?
which sex would be better to have Female or Male?
 
Males get a bit larger and look nicer overall.
 
how can you sex them
