Texas cichlids massacre

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 9" Buttikoferi thats in the tank with a 3" cobalt. The cobalt owns the rocks and when the butti swims by the cobalt runs out and nips at him and runs back in the rocks.

Im sure the Butti is just waiting for the cobalt to do that in open water. but at feeding time they are always at the surface at the same time and never an issue. right now the Butti is tolerating him but he could defintiely chew him in half.

My Butti has never eaten live food so he doesnt realize how tasty Cobalts are...

I hope that you don't plan on feeding goldfish/tuffies etc very often. They're bad for numerous reasons, mainly the chance of them spreading disease. Entertainment is fine once every couple months, just don't do it too often. Earthworms would be a much better choice and are equally as entertaining.

IME, packs of 2-3" cichlids are more of "killers" than 1 large one. For example, I had a group of 2" red devils that would kill anything in their tank, no matter what it was/how big it was. I kept the dominant male, which is now around 8" and he will actually tolerate tank mates. He gets in fights, but never actually kills things.

I'd highly recommend taking the remaining goldfish out. The way those texas are killing them must be very painful towards the goldfish. If you are really stuck on feeders, make sure they are properly quarantined and are relative to the size of your fish.
Ex: 3" fish- 1" feeders (guppies)
5" fish- 2" feeders (small goldfish)
8" fish- 3-4" feeders (medium goldfish)
12" fish 5-6" feeders (large goldfish)
18"+ fish- 7"+ feeders (feeder koi)

Basically, you want the entire fish to fit in the predators mouth, or atleast 3/4 of it. This way the feeder doesn't have to endlessly suffer.

like the texas story i have a like 20 or so fry jaguar cichlids the biggest is maybe 2 inches long tops and they ripped apart my rubber mouth pleco it was amazing but sucked cause i bought it the day before

You mean 175 gallons or 175 liters? I see you live in Montreal, so its liters there, right?

I had a similar experience with my cichlids in my 220g. I was giving them their monthly treat of rosies, and I noticed one of the rosies near the surface, still swimming, bitten in half. I have no idea which one did it, but it was savage!

3 Texas will not be comftable for long in a 175 L tank..... 175 gallons would be fine obviously!!

I have a 4" Texas that ate a 3" Chinese Algae Eater. I thought the fish was to big. Apparenty the Texas didn't. He digested it for ove 30 hours.
