So what is the diff between Carpinte and Carpintis if any???

None...it seems a lot of people think that a carpintis is a green and a carpinte or carpinte "escondido" is exclusively a blue or a cyano...:screwy:

Carpintis and carpinte are the same thing. There are a few regional morphs of the Herichthys carpintis, 'escondido' and 'laguna chairel' being two of them. The 'escondido' variety are well known for their large odd shape, almost mosaic-like, spots/blotches. The common name for h. carpintis is the Green Texas cichlid. Also known as the Pearlscale cichlid. And sometimes as the Blue Texas, but I think that common name might be harder to pin down to any single species.

Herichthys cyanoguttatus, the Texas cichlid or Rio Grande Perch, is a totally different species.

I'm not sure where the confusion has come from. I know that in the past, there were issues of mis-identification of h. carpintis that were shipped to Europe as cyanoguttatum, but that was many years ago. But in the age of the internet, there's all kinds of sources with correct information.

And you also see many people tag a carpintis as the 'escondido' morph when they are clearly not. Maybe people see the word and think that all carpintis are carpintis 'escondido'. And this probably happens a decent amount.

Hopefully this clears things up a little.

Yes good info darth...I was just stating that its so messed up with texas' and other species with genus names that most people have heared information that is wrong either from the lfs or importer.

that is an AWESOME fish with SUPER AWESOME colors!!!

that should clear up the whole cyano vs. carpintis arguement right there. Real proof in the wild...

I think what brought up the guys "LOL" was the fact that you said she was a texas (wrong) and then referred to her as a carpintis (correct).

I don't know about you guys but I've been stuck referring to the Texas (Cyano), as a Texas... Simple as that. The carpintis should not be referred to as a texas, blue or green. It is simply a Carpintis.

I know that the Texas cichlid can be found in Mexico (close to the border) but the Carpintis is NOT found in Texas. Its range begins around "Laguna del Carpintero", undoubtedly this is where the fish received it's name.

In conclusion, a fish that has never seen texas should not be referred to as a Texas... green, blue or whatever.

Wildcaught, unfortunately the Green Texas name is something commonly used. Like it or not, it's the way it is. Just like the problems with the Green Terror common name.

I realize that the carpintis is not from Texas, just a nickname...:chillpill:
