Texas face turned black

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
def doesnt look like stress to me, looks like what was in those threads with that festae and pbass, like people on those threads said it is too linear in shape of the affected area to be regular color change due to stress. no idea on what could have caused it though, what are your water parameters?

The black spot is gone. It was there 3 days and was gone yesterday when I got home. I had cleaned the tank and the ph was low I brought it back and kept the lights on. that's is it. He looks good now.I have to think it was the ph
caused it. the other peramiters are good.

exactly how low was the pH? do you do anything to mess with the pH like a chemical balancer or something and what is the pH of your tap? but thats awesome that the black went away. he looks great!!!

It was low 6.2. The Ph in this tank always goes low. The ph out off the tap is 7.0 its city water. Ph in this tank now is 7.4 and that's were I have kept it for awhile. I have a smaller 30 gallon tank and the ph in that tank stays steady for some reason. I don't really know what caused this to happen.

Can you tell me if this m or f?

oh ok yeah that is really low for a texas that very well could have been the problem since he has since gotten better since you have raised it again. is there any kind of deco in the tank that could affect the pH? and i think it is a male, has more of a male body structure and doesnt have a black spot in its dorsal so most likely its male but only for sure way to find out is if you vent it

I have had this tank running for about 3.5 years a friend gave it to me and I'v had several different type of fish in it and the ph always goes low. I started using a Seacum product called Alkyline Buffer to keep the ph from bouncing all the time. that product keeps the ph higher then I'd like it but its stable unless I fail to check for a month like I just did and keep filling the tank with new water after it evaporates.

how often do you do water changes? if your only doing top offs for a whole month then it would help to do more water changes. most recommend weekly water changes, i usually do weekly but sometimes bi-weekly water changes when i slack off a bit, but you should do them however often you need to, to keep your nitrates at or below 20. and if your doing weekly water changes then that may be often enough to keep your pH stable without having to add buffer
