Texas laid eggs....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, I definantly saw a couple white eggs. The rest are all brownish gray or tan. The parents are still fanning them. I really could use all the help I can get here. I have 2 empty 10g tanks. I have a little filter for one, but was recommended to use a sponge filter. My first step will be to get some sort of food, then get a filter figured out. Any and all help is very appreciated.

Sponge filters work the best for small fry. I've always kept my fry w/ the parents for a while b/c they were the only thing in the tank.

ok, im gettin a 55g this weekend to put the jacks into. about how long should i expect until the fry hatches and how long should i leave them with there parents before i seperate?

2-3 days to hatch, 2-3 till they are free swimming. My convicts always hatch and were swimming exactly 4 days down to the hour.

As for filter you cold put spare netting over the filter intake or pantyhose.

You should have wigglers in a couple of days, the parents might hide them from you. 5 days or so after they are wigglers they will be free swimming. They'll eat their yoke sac until they can swim. I've never breed texas before but I imagine they are great parents like similar cichlids. I'd leave them with the parents as long as possible which could be months if you are getting the other fish out of the tank. The fry will eat what comes out of the parents gills to suppliment what ever you give them. Unless I'm specifically breeding a fish I don't feed the fry, I let the parents do it. I also don'ts clean the glass on their tank as the fry will eat the algea and infosura (sp) growing on it. My fry tanks look dirty but have really clean water. I also put a small sponge on the filter to keep them from getting sucked up. There's a 100 ways to raise fry, you'll figure out what works best for you.

If this is their first time they may eat the eggs or wigglers, but they'll spawn again.

ok thanks alot guys! im getting a 55 hopefully tonight which i will then move the jacks into, so the texas will have the 90 to themselves. its filtered by a rena xp4 and an ac201 powerhead. should i cut the powerhead off or leave it on for aration?

I actually have fry from a SRT x Tex pair right now that are about two weeks old and they are great parents. She keeps them huddled in one corner in my 150 even though their are no other fish in the tank.

Awesome Davey! I'm excited. This is the first time breeding anything. Oh, I forgot to add how they paired up. I bought the big male (which is about 8") just because I had an empty tank and was going to keep him solo. I found out that he was very docile and had to move him into my 150 for a short while with some smaller fish. The smaller fish were just picked out from my lfs by me saying "Ok, pick the biggest of this, the biggest of that etc etc." The female was one that I just walked by and told the worker to "get the biggest". When they were all in the same tank I noticed breeding colors on the female. Not really thinking anything was going to happen I moved them and my 2 bigger jacks into the 90. So now she's happy with her sugar daddy

Just a little update. I'm starting to see wigglers. At first I thought momma was eating them, but she cleaned off another spot in the tank and is transporting the wigglers from the rest of the unhatched eggs and gaurding both spots.
