TFH July 08 AD: Changing The Rules !!

I just think that an advertisement with photos of that quality of non-hybrid fish would appeal to a much greater audience. Look at the pros of this community; MFK's size, activeness, and contribution from many top notch 'hardcore' Fish keepers like Aquamojo, JohnPTC etc.

I think that 'stirring the coals' with this advertisement is unnecessary, and the ad would be much more effective if it was based around the pros of this community. We've got one forum dedicated to Hybrids and it's not really that busy, I fail to see how that's changing any rules. Don't get me wrong, I like the ad, visually it looks great apart from maybe the font, but I just think you're trying to be a whole lot more 'controversial' than MFK really is. I'm already a member here, but if I wasn't and I saw that ad, I wouldn't sign up. If I saw a Jardini, a Dovii, and a Butti up there, I probably would, even though they don't reflect my taste in fish.

Hybrids will never be accepted by all people in the community, for good reason.

A dovii, a jardini, a butti are all what someone would expect to see there in an ad for a fish forum. As great of fish as those are(I like all 3) they're rather "ordinary" in a way. You don't have to have a full blooded fish to be a "top notch" keeper. You don't have to keep a certain fish to have a home here and have people learn from you. You don't have to think "I got this hybrid but those old timers hate hybrids so I won't post pics". I think it's about being different hence "Changing the rules".. This forum has always been "different" to me and I think others in what usually is a "online fish forum".

Honestly I've been told that we had some of our best membership months when we didn't have an ad at all. I don't see how this could hinder that. And since you said our hybrid forum is a slower part of the forum. Maybe this is an attempt to reach out to the hybrid community. As far as "Hybrids will never be accepted by all people" you may be right. But honestly if that thought even comes into play I think you're being narrowminded and are on one side of the fence.

Plus as said by DC these fish go with the theme of "changing the rules".

I agree with this, MFK is different to a lot of other forums, which I think stems from how represented many countries are by the members here, with it not just being basically purely American (definitely a plus). It also caters to (or attracts) lots of teenagers, which is both a pro and a con in my opinion. The problem being that while MFK does get your questions, queries or comments answered or replied to quickly, it's hardly always good information, which leads me onto my next point.

Regardless of membership signup statistics, I think the aim of advertising should be to attract exemplary fish keepers or breeders/distributors, and I think trying to make waves by releasing an advertisement with Hybrids lowers the chance of that happening, as many of them have the same opinion on hybrids as myself.

I still don't agree with the purpose behind this ad. It makes sense, though I still think it's trying to be a whole lot more controversial than MFK really is. Surely you can see my point of view.

there are people who keep hybrids and are experts at keeping them, but where do they start, always from the roots that is the true chiclid and they are experts at that too,
there are a few members who are experts at hybrids but they rarely post, but just lurk around, but if we have more people joining the hybrid keeping community may be they will find it worth their time to post and teach the new members or people who want to learn about hybrids
i know a few members here who are more interested in hybrids and are well informed about them and also keep a great number of true chiclids so the few who think that a particular type of fish keeper aren't good to mingle with then its a good thing they don't join here, this place is for people who keep fish and not just a type of fish, here on MFK we have all kinds of people and every one is treated the same then why make a difference when it comes to the type of fish being kept.

Japes, If they don't agree with it they're more than welcome to join so they can explain why. It just seems that whenever there is a discussion it turns into a flame fest. I'd like to see that change.

Good Information takes time to build... it doesn't happen over night... same as fermenting wine.

we want to create a community that cater to all fish keepers and all fish. to me fish are fish.

you are thinking way too hard and overwork on this issue... you need to "think outside the box" and one thing for sure... we cant please everyone....

We already have so many exemplary fish keepers and vendors here. I don't mean to toot MFK's horn but we pretty much are the cream of the crop in vendors, members, admins, setup. There are great members who maybe would never keep a hybrid or are against them but there are also great members who might know more than that "hardcore" non-hybrid keeper but just prefers hybrids or has one and sees no problem with them. In the coming years you will see a changing of the tides. It's already happening actually. As said in the OP more and more people are accepting hybrids.

Japes, I see where you're getting at but I think that view is a close minded view on cichlids. It's one that other forums/groups have thought in the past and I don't think it's led to good things. MFK has some good brains behind it. The ad might not please everyone. But I can bet it was well thought out and for the better of MFK.
