haha with the inches I hope you mean feet, but the 8X8 would give you the most square footage and would probably be the best. All the sizes you posted should be good for any rays. I am going to try and build a 8'X4'X2-2.5' this summer.

"yes .... Of coarse it's in feet" lol

I'm sure rays would be happy in any of the three I decide to build....

I just want opinions on what would make them happiest....

;)

If you have any ?"s on yours when time arrives feel free to IM me....I've built a thing or 2 in my days ;)

Holy friggin' tool day! Merry Christmas and happy birthday all in one! Lol! I would make a 12' x 4' footprint.

I would say from a viewing standpoint the 12x4 would be best..... 4 ft is quite deep for most ray set ups

Looks like someone's a Dewalt fan..... lol. All that yellow would make me uncomfortable....

Is there a router there I'm missing? (gray case next to compressor?) Would definetly be one of the first tools I'd pick up for a build like this.

How much room do you have to work with?

As far as a shape, it seemed to me that my rays enjoyed rectangle over square. Easier for them to establish boundries and seems like they really enjoy going from one end of the tank to the other. Seemed in a square they were much less active. Could have just been my rays though.

Think a head to seperating your rays in the event of breeding, fighting, food intake observation or whatever reason, and how you will acomplish this. All of a sudden a long rectangle tank sounds a lot more appealing. Will be wise to address how to hold dividers and how to secure air lines and diffusers during the build to rather then after. Also is VERY handy to always have options to expand. IF you only need a pair of 2 inch drains then install 3" or (4) 2"ers and plug them. Overbuild by building for double what you ever think you'll need. Put drains everywhere you think bio crud will build up. You'll be glad you did. I'd also want huge drains plummed to the sewer so the only restriction as far as how fast you can do waterchanges is how fast your sewer will take it.

What are you planning on for filtration?

Are you planning to cover it? An 8x8 open top would be really cool to look in from above. If it's covered and side is the only way to view, 12x4 would probably be better.

DB is right, a rectangle is easier to separate if you need to do that. No matter which one you choose your rays will definitely love it!

12x4x3' tall would be best imo.easier to monitor, catch, watch fish than 8x8.
hope you had a discount coupon at least for the 10% off all those tools..ebay has coupons for 99 cents getting 10% off lowes!(in case you didnt know)

I can see where your tax money went LOL! 12 x 4 all the way, this will give the rays a long distance to swim back and forth.
