I cant beleive I didnt think of it earlier, I guess my advanced age is catching up to me, but about 2 weeks ago I had a wipeout too. The tropicals in the pond- my 5 plecos 8"- 14", 8" leporinus, 12" RTGG, a pair of 2"white, and a pair of 2" striped convicts all bit the big one. On one of those really cold nights we had a few weeks ago- I put together a quick indoor pond (about 50 gallons) because I didnt want to overload the tanks when I brought them in. I put about 20 gallons from the big tank and 10 from the 50 and the difference in primed tap. I had 2 powerhead type filters going, but it was too crowded. I had certainly seen far worse. I was wrong to think that they would be fine for the 6 hours I slept til morning.

i think you age is cathing up with you.... cuz you were in my house 2 days later telling me this very story... i sent you home with birthday cake and plant trimmings

Uhhh...oh...right. I did remember the event but I wasnt sure which side of it I saw you two on. Your right- I said that I dont have to worry about it all getting eaten anymore- the plants not the cake. You know its not only old age, but believe it or not, back in my day some folks thought I was a real heckraiser, so my youthful vigor and verve to whoop it up might also have rounded the corners on some inside the skull cells. You wait and see... crazy kids with their rocknroll music and white sneakers and whatnot

sorry for your losses, but what is prime?

Howzabout an update?

the L239 is back to his good ol self.. still in the shrimp tank.. hes really enjoying being able to bulldoze the sand, shrimp and javamoss... i think hes scared of the 1.5" clown pleco thats also in that tank.. he is staying on the other side of the tank and just hanging out near the powerhead/sponge filter.. the tiny clown pleco is hanging out on the wood...

one more congo tetra died... so out of 6 males and 1 female.. there are now 2 males and 1 female... the skinny weak male remains uneffected by all that has happens.. his color is weak as always... the other male is doing better but not great.. hes been swiming around the tank a bit.. his reds are still "wrong".. hes got a copper tint to the red.. i dont really know what that means but ive never seen them do it when they are happy.. his breating is a lot better.. still a bit hard but its finally at a normal rate...

im not sure but i think theres a pile of snails eating a dead oto.. theres also several dead ramshorn snails...
the corys are still being a bit slower than usuial but none of them died so.. WIN!!...

my gf called the water department today.. they said nothing new was done and that they test the water twice a day... somehow i dont believe them since the towns website has not been updated since early 2006.. they would not tell her over the phone (wtf) what they test for other than "toxins and things that should not be in drinking water" but if we submit a form we could get some real answers... i dont think im gunna bother.. were just gunna pick up an RO system... atleast now ill have water in the fishroom/livingroom....

words can not express the guilt i feel.. i had trouble sleeping lastnight... i feel like such a wuss...

Dont feel like a wuss because of the fish, how could you have known? its not your fault. If you want to feel like a wuss, it should be because of all those other days that you actually were a wuss! Ha!

That sucks the fish died. I tested my water after reading this thread and my nitrates were at 50 ppm (From the tap) . So im building a water drum to age the water and carbon filter / heat it

Aging water handles chlorine, but not chloramine
Carbon filter handles some ammonia, chlorine, but still not chloramine
Heating is more to avoid temperature shock

I'm sure you'll add conditioner to deal with choloramine.... but...
How does this handle nitrates?

The only way to reduce nitrates apart from Water changes (where it should be lower, but it's not) are from what I know:
- denitrator (DIY coil or w/e could),
- deep sand bed, and
- plants

It doesn't unfortunately, but it will help in your specified area's as I planned. My water may be unfortunate but I want to do all I can. I know what im doing and this is better than simply tapping it with 5 gallon buckets.

i now have a RO system :)

its used so i need to find new filters for it (since its been over a year since it was used and theres still water in it... eww) i also need to change the fittings on it since they are copper and brass..
