yes metal heaters and titanium are far better but the cost of a good high quality one with a reliable temp probe keeps people from buying them
generally a good quality glass heater will last for a long time if its alowed to adjust to the tanks temp and not used in a no water situation the heater in in my thread starter came with a package deal and i really did'nt trust it so i would advise people to buy the high end glass or dish out the dough for the best metal heater available at least it will not need to be replaced

i'm glad you posted your errors it good for inexperianced aquatist to understand the care needed in a heater particly the cheapo's

We've been using the Won Brothers titanium heaters and they've been working fine. The external temp. controller is too easy to turn so when the temp. is right I put a drop of hot glue against it so the cat or someone doesn't accidentally bump it up/down. Also some have a digital thermometer display and ours is accurate within 1 degree+/-. Ive had to many bad experiences w/glass heaters that decided to move up w/technology. A cheap guard can be made.
 
I don't know how to post links... yet. Just go to my ebey and start a new search for titanium heaters. The Won Brothers heaters are Pro Heat and Pro Heat II (the ones w/digital temp. display). There are lot's of reputable ebay stores there That sell aquarium and pond stuff, even Petsolutions!

Thanks guppy i've wondered how to do that did'nt want ask fear of ridicule I guess , never had the time to read the ways around cpu's can tear apart and rebuild them though go figure.
 
Just make sure that you use some reinforcements on the glass heaters. If you have bigger fish, I've heard some success stories on Titanium Heaters. Again, I would place it in the middle or anywhere else but defintiely away from the corner. That was one of my first mistakes. I have a 40 G (which I will upgrade soon) which houses two 8.5" PACUS and an 11" Arowana. Inside is a 150W Glass Heater with extra reinforcements. No problem. Rule of thumb, if you cannot push it the heater with two fingers, it won't move.
