can mossballs and duckweed do it too?
 
Since you have light in the sump you could try some pothos. I just put about ten stems in my tank to help with nitrates.

UPDATE!

Got myself a nice piece of driftwood. Recently my senegal has been kind of moody and I fear the little ones might get harressed. So I got this to serve as a hideout for my little palma polli, lapradei and endli.

Pulled out roots and snap off sharp edges first,
Finish with a jet of water to get anything out.
