Duckweed would work OK, but you're limited to the surface area though.

Since you have light in the sump you could try some pothos. I just put about ten stems in my tank to help with nitrates.

Got myself a nice piece of driftwood. Recently my senegal has been kind of moody and I fear the little ones might get harressed. So I got this to serve as a hideout for my little palma polli, lapradei and endli.
Pulled out roots and snap off sharp edges first,
Finish with a jet of water to get anything out.
Here is the driftwood hideout in the tank
All it took was a ladder... I'll never get a 2.5' high tank again
True enough, my 3 little babies loved it.
Went to chill in there just 5 mins after I place it in.
