I didn't have sand in there because it was a stingray tank before. It did have some black sand in there and all it would get sucked into the intakes for my filters. It is a slate tile bottom. River rock is a great idea! I am going to look into it.
The plants are aquarium systems fancy plants, I used 4-6 of the 4ft asparagus fern and just attached to make longer. They are anchored by rocks in the clay pots.
