u ever try aging your water before doing a water change?

Nope. Have always just added directly to the tank. From back in the day of HOB filters with Prime or other chlorine removers to now a days with a line ran directly from the drip filters.

I have hard water. So hard that I have no choice but to use external pumps. Couldn't get a pondmaster to last 2 years if my life depended on it. Hard enough that pot scrubbies could be weapons of destruction after a year in my water. They become hard enough to easily throw through a window if they're used submerged. My local pool supply store tested my water with thier fancy computer and PH was 8.6+, topped thier machine out. It doesn't matter if I drip 100 gallons a day or 500 my rays look like hell, don't breed, and based on the amount others feed they eat half as much and grow half as fast. But year after year I'm told the same thing - "Rays adapt to anything. You can keep them in any water and they'll be happy" Who am I to argue with the people here that are breeding rays like rabbits? I see pics of pups posted here year after year and can't help but think something's seriously wrong, but every time I try to get help I'm led in that familiar vicious circle - Rays adapt to anything. So I redo my filtration, cause something's not right and everyone seems to think it's not the water. Well, I'm sick of stressing over it. I'll change the water and if that doesn't help then it might be time to leave the hobby, or at least the Marble part of it.

Just tired of feeling like a failure, cause let's be realistic, that's all this whole Marble endevor has been. Aquire the nicest ones I can find regardless of cost, fail to breed them, watch the pattern deteriorate so bad that a $1000 Marble turns into a $300 Marble in a year or less and have to sit back and watch everyone else's rays get nicer by the day, breed, and grow. It's gotten to the point that even thinking about it makes me sick. Year after year watching it gets harder and harder. There's only so much you can take before giving the whole endevour a big "F" you. The water experiment will either fix my problem and solve alot of unanswered questions or it will land my Marbles in the care of others. No point in participating in borderline crulety to rays just by having them at my place.

U getting a new water filter system?

U ever try "not" doing any waterchanges for like 2 weeks and see wht happens? U ever test for iron?

Yup, tried killing drips for a few weeks.... Seem happier with theier WCs.

The water analysis tested zero for metals. Never tested positive for any copper.

If I remeber correctly the highest TDS #s I recall from the fellow raykeepers here is the guys up north at 600-700. Will be intresting to see where I'm at. Considering the 1000+ numbers I hear of from the reefkeepers is in the largest city in Iowa I wouldn't be suprised if I'm higher then that. The area I live in is notorious for terrible water.

Will be messing with mixing RO and tap within the next month or so. Still shopping for RO units. If it doesn't work for the rays at least my eels will enjoy it.

Looking good Al, hope the change in water setup yields you all the pups you want...........

Thanks man.....

I'd be happy if they just kept thier patterns... lol Just stinks they breed like rabbits with the previous owner then get here and nothing. At least it will all be a learning experience that hopefully answers a lot of doubt.

DB something else to concider is diet. I know this is comparing apples to cherries, quite a few years ago I had 2 very large pairs of oscars in my care. I was told both pairs were "proven breeders" but after 2 years of care and no eggs/fry I started asking questions [this was before the net was around] the best answer I received was diet. Then I had access to lots of crayfish so I tried feeding them. 1 week later both pairs had huge spawns, was it time for them to spawn or the food ? I would bet a paycheck on the food. being that was the only thing that had changed and I was feeding the same diet they had eaten for several years prior.

Just something to think about.

Do you think perhaps you have too many rays in the tank for breeding?? Just a thought but maybe they would feel more comfortable with less rays in there.

I would think mixing with r/o is a great idea. Just a matter of figuring out how much to mix in to get your tds where you want it and then figuring out how to drip that or just doing manual changes

I really don't think I'm keeping them any differently then they were previously kept. Diet is the same, primarely shrimp, along with fish and homemade stuff.

There seems to be intrest in breeding, quite a bit, if there wasn't I'm sure the seperated female would have never quite eating and she'd have lots of her disk back.....

Doesn't really seem to me to be an issue with them breeding, but rather the females carrying full term. Last time my 2 biggest proven girls had pups they each only had 1.

I'm gonna try the RO without DI to start with but the whole ratio thing will be a mystery until I have stuff to measure TDS, PH, conductivity, etc, as I have NO clue where I'm at numberwise. I've always tried to keep it simple and just WC if I see anything goofy but maybe in extreme cases it takes more of a head on approach to nail down the root of the problem.

Icing on the cake...... A Dorado got munched tonight and while fishing out the spine I noticed my big air pump quit. No more air driven bio reactors. Needless to say after solving that problem I may be a believer in using the draining water to turn the media rather then relying on air. I think the best approach is to just use the stuff (K1) in multiple different ways then no matter what way works best you have it incorporated. The draining water sure seems to tumble the stuff harder. Hugh - Sorry I doubted you.

I agree it has to be a water issue, obviously you are seeing a ton of breeding signs just not the pups. Diet wise I am feeding basically the same thing you are with no concerns there.

Good luck with it all, you are way overdue for some good luck!
