THE BEANI CHRONICLES...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Waiting for the next chapter.....

I feed low protein food exclusively, HBH soft spiulina and HBH goldfish.
I have read reports that the main food of beani in nature is algae.
While snorkeling with R octofaciatum a months ago in Mexico, I watched them hunt, and miss their target 9 out of 10 times, and in between graze abundant algae. While I believe given the opportunity, any cichlid will take the most high protein food available, just as I would eat steak everyday if I could.
This does not mean it is the best for them or me.
I have never had an issue with bloat with beani, at least so far, with this regime.

My main reason for feeding exclusively NLS is the quality of ingredients and the diversity of those ingredients.

HBH Soft Spirulina
MAIN INGREDIENTS: Spirulina, Fish Meal, Wheat Flour, Green Pea Powder, Propylene Glycol, Fructose, Fish Oil, Brewers Dried Yeast, Lecithin Dry, Zuchini Powder. Carrot Powder, Garlic Powder, Zeolite, Haematococcus, Glucone-Delta-Lactone, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (C). With Added Vitamins And Minerals GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:Min. Protein 33%, Min. Fat 13%, Max. Fiber 2%, Max. Moisture 18%, Max Ash 8%.

NLS Cichlid Formula
Ingredients: Whole Antarctic Krill Meal, Whole Herring Meal, Whole Wheat Flour, Whole Squid Meal, Algae Meal, Soybean Isolate, Beta Carotene, Spirulina, Garlic, Vegetable and Fruit Extract (Spinach, Red & Green Cabbage, Peas, Broccoli, Red Pepper, Zucchini, Tomato, Kiwi, Apricot, Pear, Mango, Apple, Papaya, and Peach), Vitamin A Acetate, D-Activated Animal-Sterol (D3), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine, DL Alphatocophero ( E ), Riboflavin Supplement, Folic Acid, Niacin, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, L-Ascorby-2-Polyphosphate (Stable C), Choline Chloride, Copper Proteinate, Ethylenediamine dihydroiodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude protein (min) 34%
Crude fat (min) 5%
Crude fiber (max) 5%
Moisture (max) 10%
Ash (max) 9%

Vitamins:
Vitamin A (min) 8,000 IU/kg
Vitamin D (min) 450 IU/kg
Vitamin E (min) 200 IU/kg

Honestly NLS looks like it wins across the board. Only 1% more protien in NLS and 13% fat for HBH and 5% for NLS.

12/13/2012-Precautionary Measures

All is well with them today and theyre starting to show a bit of aggression towards eachother and espescially in the larger 3. If you guys have seen RD's epsom salt treatment for bloat i did a precautionary feeding today to hopefully flush out any bad goings in internally. Soaked some 1mm pellets in the 3% salt solution and they ate them up very quickly with no issues. I wil do this two more days to get them cleansed. Will be doing this treatment of feeding salt solution saoked pellets periodically (2 days per month followed by 1 day of fasting) throughout their growth as a preventive measure to hopefully be ahead of the curve and avoid future issues.

All in all they are doing fantastic and looking better every day.

Keep up the great work.

Glad to hear they are doing Great! I agree with you also that NLs is a all around amazing staple with very high quality ingrediants, cant go wrong with NLS! IMO though I would Isolate each one wich is 100 percent sure success but to each is own!

I agree isolation would be the best way to go, but I'm going for a pair and isolation IMO isn't the best way to get a solid pair cause isolated fish are almost always somewhat intolerant to tank mates. I have had success raising small groups in large tanks and getting good pairs so that's my main thinking. Gave them lots of room and hides to help dilute aggression.
