Aren't salvinis too big at full size? Or do they stay ~6"? I love some of the pics of salvinis, but some of the full grown ones don't have that awesome yellow color and frankly look dull.

Females display awesome bright yellow/red coloration since they're babies, and stay smaller. Males are the ones that might look dull.

I 100% agree. Cryptoheros sp are cool. Cryptoheros nanoluteus is a very smaller growing fish. I'd also include fish from the thorichtys family,

Rainbow cichlids (h. multispinosa) are a good choice ... small central american cichlids, peaceful, easy to keep ...

honestly, keep whatever fish you like, just know you'll have to start over every year or however long you want. when i first started i only had a 20g tank and i would buy whatever fish interested me at the time, once it got too big i would trade it in for something new and diffrent. granted, that costs alitthe bit more money then buying fish u can keep for years, but i've had so many diffrent fish, and diffrent combos that its been worth it. Now i have a 110g tank with some of my favorite fish in it.

Yeah, that's a good point. I think trying to get a breeding pair out of one of the Cryptoheros/Archocentrus species might be the best choice at the moment. I mean, of course I'd love a red tail cat but that could work for about 4 days until he got too big haha.
