The best sand available that won"t cause havac with your canister filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Install a spin down filter before your canister, the tornado action pushes sand to the sides and bottom. As sand gets in it you can drain it off bottom. Then who cares what kind of sand you get

CaribSea black sand gets sucked up very easily and also stays on your rays disc longer.
The torpedo beach sand looks like your best option both for filter and viewing purposes.

I have PFS with some tahitian moon mixed in to darken it up. When I clean my filters I'll find small amounts of TMS in them that the fish spit into the intakes, but I almost never see PFS get sucked up.

Mmmmm yet another sand thread

Unipac tana is the best I have ever had

I know you guys probably can't get it in the US but the thread title didn't say the best sand in the US

You guys are missing out on this one it's perfect

It sinks fast and doesn't stick to the rays

I could send it but the shipping costs will be a joke as the average ray tank needs 160 lb

It's not super cheap but not expensive about $1.25 for 2.2 lb

Your best bet would be to contact them direct and import a few pallet loads then ship it out to each person from a fixed point

One thing I have to say about tana is it's real dirty and takes more than 3 x to wash it compared to anything else I have used

If you don't wash it well the water wild be a mess for ages and the sand looks like brown auger which fades in time which shows it has a lot of colour added

I just use the sand I find at my lfs. My ray is still little so not much sand is being kicked up but I've had no problem using it with my 1' chocolate cichlid.
