i love soup.... i made some chicken and bean soup today.. looking forward to large soup related grocery list... love love soup..

i'm sure you can google it. home made pho is excellent. the main ingredient is the broth. get that right and your pho will taste great. boil a pot of water, add bones with meat on it (beef, and not sure which parts exactly), add beef balls from your local asian market, chopped onions, salt and black pepper.

then get your rice noodle, tripe, thin slices of beef, tendon, shrimp, bacon (yes bacon, cooked to a crisp and crushed into pieces), green onion, cilantro, lime, bean sprout, mint leaves, oyster sauce, hoisen sauce, sriracha hot sauce, fish sauce, crushed peanuts are generally what people put in pho

Where did you get this info from? You even had shrimps and crushed peanuts in there which is way wrong bud! Crushed bacon is not to be put on Pho, but other Vietnamese noodle soups. Are you sure you're talking about Pho there? lol

Pho is the #1 soup (if not dish) for most Vietnamese. Homemade is always better (no MSG for sure) and my wife makes this thing all the time, but some secret taste can only be achieved at really good restaurants. Each has its own twist to the flavor/smell. If a bow of Pho brought to me looks clear enough and smells beefy, it's already very high on my grading scale. How you eat it may also change your experience; I dip the meat in dipping sauce (hoisin+sautee+lime) and bundle it with mints. Ask for boiled bean sprout as too much of fresh beansprout may change/neutralize the taste of the Pho bow. I can talk for a long time about this subject :)

However, for me the #1 soup is Bun Bo Hue, which is very nicely done by Bun Bo Hue An Nam in San Jose. I always drive 30 minutes down there for meals from Palo Alto on business trips.

There are other soups on Vietnamese menu that are very good too. Sheez, I'm hungry already and I just had spaghetti for dinner.

That Korean "Juk Gae Jang" spicy shredded-beef-broth soup is very good. A very good companion with Korean sauteed squid dish :)

Won ton soup? How about a bow of good Hot-n-Sour soup which is not done right without shredded baby bamboo shoot?

The best clam chowder that I've had so far was from Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay area (south of San Francisco), an expensive bow of soup though!

Wendy's chilli is not bad, a good alternative for fast food. Just had one last week with my kids.

(done for now)

and i gave you 2 internet points for the squirrel soup. then i took away 3 for not actual squirrel. :irked:

Yeah the squirrel soup turned out to be a let down since it is in name only.....

Sorry guys... We had a family friend growing up who was particularly gullible and misheard my mom say it was escarole soup, so we all played along with it and the name squirrel soup just stuck.

In no particular order

-Wonton soup made from scratch
-Fresh calm chowder made with fresh caught razor clams
-Pho made at home with beef & meatballs (good sober food) & is only good to me when you add..hoisin, green onions, cilantro, bean sprouts
-Seafood pho, I peel a lot of shrimp & simmer the peels for about half hour along with mushrooms then strain, served with mussel, shrimp, crab, squid
-carrot beef stew
-broccoli cheese soup (I think it's just the cheese that makes it addicting)
-Fresh slow simmered chili
-A chicken stocked soup filled with shrimp, pineapple, tomato , chicken
-miso soup with tofu is good depending on if it's made right
-egg drop soup is good once in awhile
-red curry with beef, always spicy
-Fresh made chili, using a tad bit of liquid smoke

Oh & I can't forget home mad tomato soup with shredded cheese on top served with a grilled ham & cheese!

Chicken noodle soup will always be my favorite but, I love soup so much I'm willing to try almost anything. I love a good udon noodle soup as well. I make a really tasty, really easy to make sausage and kale soup. You can add almost anything to it that you want. If you like it spicy then make it with spicy sausage. Add pasta if you want, mushrooms, you name it and it always comes out tasty.

If I had unlimited funds I would have all kinds of chowder shipped to me from Pike Place Chowder in Seattle. The shipping cost is just too high for someone 3000 miles away!
